It was also a very early serial numbered card and we had no clue how replacements would be treated. These were very condition sensitive out of packs and this was the very early years of grading and some of us started to collect and wanted graded examples in high grade.

It wasn’t THAT early. I remember the consensus was as it was VERY shocking and disappointing Upper Deck did this. The reason UD gave? Because they had so many different ways they numbered cards (foil stamp, machine ink stamped, hand written, dot matrix, and rubber stamped) that it was easier for them to just issue hand written numbering to make sure they didnotuse the wrong way of numbering the card.

At the time, UD had issued the first all serial numbered set already, and almost every manufacturer had numbered cards for 2 years or more.

UD was the first one to hand number replacement cards that were machine numbers somehow previously.

Any stats ever curated or kept on this? Like 20% sent in and hand wrote? Additionally how those have graded over the years vs the original stamped?

Whats the first football stamped serial number release? 96 donrus elites?
