The College Football Playoff is moving to a straight seeding model for the 2025 season.
Teams will be seeded based on the selection committee's ranking, awarding first-round byes to the top four programs regardless of whether they won their conference. The five highest-ranked conference champions will still receive automatic bids into the playoff but will only be seeded according to their ranking. The CFP's management committee, comprised of the 10 FBS commissioners and Notre Dame athletic director Pete Bevacqua, unanimously agreed to the change Thursday. "After evaluating the first year of the 12-team playoff, the CFP management committee felt it was in the best interest of the game to make this adjustment," executive director Rich Clark said in a statement. "This change will continue to allow guaranteed access to the playoff by rewarding teams for winning their conference championship, but it will also allow us to construct a postseason bracket that recognizes the best performance on the field during the entire regular season." In last season's playoff, the first under the 12-team format, the top four seeds and accompanying byes were automatically given to the four highest-ranked conference champions. As a result, ninth-ranked Boise State (Mountain West champion) earned the 3-seed, while No. 11 Arizona State (Big 12 winner) was the 4-seed in the tournament. Both teams lost their second-round matchups, though Arizona State took Texas to overtime in the Peach Bowl. If the new format had been in place last season, nonconference winners Texas and Penn State would have received the first-round byes alongside Oregon and Georgia. Notre Dame, which is independent of the conferences, is now eligible to receive a bye in the playoff. This will also be the final season of the 12-team playoff format, with the CFP expanding to either 14 or 16 teams starting in 2026, sources told Action Network's Brett McMurphy. No future model has been finalized, but the SEC and Big Ten are pushing for a 16-team format in which they each receive four automatic bids, Yahoo Sports' Ross Dellenger reports. If Texas wanted a bye, they could have easily stayed in the Big XII under the old system, right?

I find it very strange that the Big 10 and SEC are insisting on 4 automatic bids for each of them in the upcoming 16-team playoff.
Even if there were no automatic bids beyond conference champ, I cannot imagine a situation where each conference wasn't able to put at least 4 teams each into the dance. If we use this past season as an example, the SEC would have had 6 teams (and the same 4 from the Big 10). Anyways.... 94 days to Texas-OSU. |

All of this with be hashed out after this year when the whole playoff system gets revamped again. Hopefully, things end at 16. I don't want to get to a spot where we are at 20-24 team playoff with games of "play ins" or something. |

I would guess the SEC and B1G will have their championship weekend loaded up with a game between 3rd and 6th place and a game with their 4th and 5th place as play in games to further their TV revenue, in addition to their championship games.
I also see where the SEC is hinting at going to a nine game conference schedule and an agreement to play a B1G opponent in the non-conference. Teams like Kentucky won’t be able to load up on games with the Ohio Bobcats or Kent State like they had been to get bowl eligibility. |

Has the power conference reduced the amount of cupcake teams to play in their non conference schedule? If I'm Oregon, Ohio State, Texas, Alabama, etc, I'd schedule a good team to play in the regular season just in case they meet them again in the playoff.
Edit: nevermind. Oregon still playing Montana state as their first game.

Ohio State plays Texas for the next 2 seasons, Bama in '27 and '28, and UGA in '30 and '31. They aren't messing around.

Well they probably get in most years even if they lose those games.

The flipside is that these regular season game don't have the juice they used to. Looking at Ohio States schedule (most big time programs are similar). 12 games - 6 (maybe 5) they can sleep walk a win, 3 or 4 should be wins as long as they are competent, 3 games which are going to be competitive. If a 2 loss team can sneak into playoffs, OSU really only needs to go 1-2 and hold easy serve on the rest. Quote:

Much to the surprise of no one, they have announced that Coach Corso's final College Gameday broadcast will be taking place in Columbus for the Texas-OSU game.
81 days away. |

[QUOTE=Scottish Punk;19923098]Yes, one of the few benefits, imo, of this new college football landscape is that with a 14 team playoff, you can still get in with 2 losses. Provided they are the "correct" losses, so this should mean big teams are willing to play other big teams.
For most teams I would agree. For a team like Ohio State who has yet to beat Michigan in this new NIL Era that began on July of 2021. I’m using Ohio State as an example because Ryan Day has a tremendous record with a Natty. What fans need to realize is that losing to your biggest rival might mean more to the biggest donors than winning a title. These high end boosters have huge expectations on these coaches. We Are Marshall probably had some truth behind the scenes on how the largest donor was telling the Marshall President who was in charge. What coaches had done before this new era will last only so long. NIL & Porthole have created the opportunity to flip the script in short time. Fans may not like the change but most of them don’t understand that when a player is injured it falls upon the family though I’m sure the bigger schools take care of their own. If a player has a long lasting injury it’s on the ex-collegiate player to take care of it. I have no issues with fb players being paid in a collision sport. |
