I am not buying. I do not see any long term potential at this point. I am just keeping what I have because I like Soto the player.

At this point there are only two current players who I think still have long term value...Ohtani and Judge.

So you think decline from here and not flat at a minimum?

You think flat, or increase?

There's a lot of Soto stuff I wouldn't touch at todays prices, so I'm down on (buying) Soto too.

But I'm still buying certain cards. 2019 Topps and Topps Chrome parallels are mainly my chase this past year or two. Independence Day. Gold Refractor. Stuff I should have bought in 2019.

He still has a shot at 600HR, will likely go in the hof etc though so did Jim Thome and not many people care. Soto will be a bigger name because of NY, but I think he has to win multiple ws to hit another level.

Which is why he needs to win the ws with the Mets and I'd argue multiple ones. Nobody is going to care in 2040 that he won a ws with the Nats in 2019.

You are pretty active when it comes to this hobby. You also extract value by buying raw and grading. There is no doubt in my mind that you can buy Soto cards (especially in the off season) and can make a nice profit on him.

I on the other hand just like to buy and hold (and pretty much never sell). I just don't see enough future demand (even though I believe he will reach many milestones including 500 HR and will be a HOF) that will move the needle.

I started collecting as a Kid in the late 80's and 90's. There are tons of HOF players, but how many move the needle hobby wise...mainly Griffey Jr.

I am not sure if Soto reaches Miguel Cabrera numbers...so that might be the best case production wise...Are you ok with this long term outcome hobby wise?

On the other hand Ohtani and Judge are doing generational things. This drives demand higher and higher. So I am fairly confident both players cards will rise in value over time.

You might be right!!! On the other hand I have Covid, Tatis Jr., and Franco PTSD. I bought the majority of my cards at the exact wrong time and I am stuck with the pain of losing so much money.

thats what i like to call "Collecting Tax".
its all part of the learning process in this thing we call a collecting journey.

do you, or have you ever opened wax?
you think you lost a lot of money on the cards you bought at their peaks...
imagine how much youve lost on wax. Yes, opening wax has its enjoyment factor but the fact is its at least a losing financial outcome 99.3% of the time.

the best thing you can do with this hobby is to buy things you enjoy, abd if they "go to zero" (yes, i understand and agree that nobody wants this to happen, but its real life) so be it.

Please help me understand. If you're so worried about losing money then why not sell? You say you're a collector but reading your posts it seems like you have the mentality of a flipper. It's truly confusing.

Selling takes time and effort! Whats the point of selling Tatis Jr. RC cards at 5 to 10% of what I paid for them?

I am looking to collect players I like and that I think will provide long term value.

You are absolutely correct. I learned the hard way...by losing a ton of money (and also being very unlucky with Tatis Jr. and Franco).

I bought some wax during Covid, but never opened any. Its just not my thing and seems like a way worse gamble than buying singles of current players.

I enjoy collecting players that are playing well. Once they stop playing well it isn't so fun anymore.

He's always worried about the value of low-end Ohtani.

Do you remember what Tatis Jr. was selling for in 2021 at his peak? I thought he was the next Ken Griffey Jr. at the time.

Last year during the middle of the season I was worried about low end Ohtani RC, because in my opinion the price did not seem to reflect what he was accomplishing on the field. I told everyone that the prices were way to low and the prices did not make sense. And I was 100% correct.

I am not worried about Ohtani low end RC prices any more. I feel the demand will continue to grow and right now we are at a new floor in pricing. We shall see if I am right.

Oh so you're one of those can't take a loss people. Anyone who has sold cards has taken a loss. And you don't have to sell when cards of the player have tanked. You can sell Ohtani and Judge now to purchase better Ohtani and Judge cards.

If you want cards that will hold long term value then you need to sell all of your base cards and invest in rarer cards. Investing in cards is rarely a good idea but good luck.
