This is exactly the right take

Brady shouldn't have screwed the paying fans over just because the promoter was being irresponsible.

Is it wrong that I actually like Tom Brady more because of this?

He won my team a Super Bowl. He can be as douchey as he wants to be as far as I'm concerned.

No, because it’s helps reinforce your stigma as a bitter old man.

Next up Tom becomes like Leo and starts dumping women when they hit 25.

Or knocking them up then dumping them......oh wait.

What's amazing to me is that the items were a "send-in" service and whenever you have a send-in, you risk the auto being good or not so good. The thought here was ""I spent XX dollars to get them signed so it better be a good sig so my item can be worth XXXX more".

I wonder if the signing would have been in-person and Tom just gave the fast autograph if they would have said "hey Tom, can you make the B better" or if they caught him in the elevator and got a free fast sig, would they still complain?

I'm finding it kinda hard to believe that the guy had a big enough set of inflated balls to tell Tom Brady to his face he wasn't happy with the signatures.

Now that is something I'd like to see, yet nobody with a phone caught it...

You think recording was allowed?

Brady was angry because he had to sign 100 pieces of mem instead of 100 books. This is just funny.

Article stated everybody had dump their cell phones into a trash bag while walking in. So no recordings.

Definitely the funniest part of the entire debacle. 50/50 chance it never happened though.

Just bad on Brady and on the promoter for this.

Doesn't matter if the folks who paid $3,600 for this were doing it to sell or to collect: they got a bad deal here. As somebody who collects memorabilia, specifically game used footballs, those items are less desirable now.

KG was a rookie and they held a signing at a school or library or something. Rumor going around is he was pissed he didn’t get more money to sign (I paid something silly like $20 for a full size basketball). He still signed for everyone. He is now a known tightwad who stiffs pizza delivery people.

Sometimes in life we are all presented with unfair/crappy situations. Taking the high road is the best way to go.

Honestly, he should have signed properly and go back to the promoters and work out additional compensation. Breach of contract.

My HS football coach told us, "how you treat the lunch ladies and janitors is probably how you'll be remembered by the masses".

I think it's so true. It takes zero talent/money to treat 100 people the right way.

I'm a dealer and promoter. Send Ins are all part of the game. Either the person wanting an auto cant physically be there. Or people are sending items into a private signing, which is how most signatures are obtained.

The only risk to the person sending in, is that a wrong color marker is used or a signature/inscription end up in a place they didn't prefer.

The thought of the player just scribbling a line instead of actually signing their name, is never something anyone would ever worry about. Send in or not, that isnt how a paid signing works. Well, unless they are dealing with Brady I guess.

this was NOT a paid signing. it was a business event that included a photo/meet & greet and a signature. the sig was supposed to be either on Bradys book or a photo.

These guys tried to make this a paid signing. one guy bought 6 "seats" to the event just to get his stuff signed.

It’s nice to see that, even in retirement, the same old haters obsessed with everything Brady does are still the same old haters obsessed with everything Brady does.

I don't believe that anyone on this thread is disputing the fact that the promoter agreed to a set of terms with Brady (or his reps) to only sign certain pre-approved items. Unfortunately, the promoter agreed to a different set of terms with VIP customers of the event, which is why they paid $3,600 and bought multiple seats. These customers, which also appear to be Tom Brady super fans (and/or rich memorabilia collectors), would not have purchased those tickets and brought their valuable memorabilia for signing if this was not the case. Clearly the promoter is negligent / incompetent. However, Tom Brady had three choices at that point: 1) he could have just signed these valuable items with his proper signature, let everyone know that he did this out of respect for his fans, and filed a claim against this promoter, 2) he could have announced to the customers that he did not agree to these terms with the promoter and refuse to sign these items (while offering to sign the other pre-approved items), or 3) decide to act like a child and deface these expensive pieces of rare memorabilia. He chose option 3, which resulted in negative PR and perhaps some legal/financial blowback. It would have been really easy to simply go down the path of option 1 or option 2...

From what I've read it sounds like the book and photo options we're preapproved by Fanatcis (who Brady has an exclusive contract with). One thing I haven't seen mentioned is that I'd imagine Brady could've been held liable to breach of contract if he signed all of these items properly and I'm sure his Fanatics contract is worth millions so just signing things properly was probably never a real option. The only correct thing he could've done was just not sign anything, IMO that would've been way better than just scribbling on such valuable items.
