I said when Chubb went down, that might be the best thing for Watson. He "grew up" in Houston playing mostly in a spread formation. The Browns wanted to make him an under center QB, centered around Chubb. I'm not sure what the splits were, but the Browns had Watson in the gun a lot more yesterday and also had an empty backfield more than I have seen from this team in a long time.
I noticed this too.

Previously it was a run first offense predicated on play action. Yesterday was much more pass oriented and he looked much better.

With this defense, the key in many games might just be to be efficient, cut down on the mistakes, and don't turn the ball over.

Yesterday reminded me much more of Houston Watson. The arm talent is still there (probably in the 2nd - 3rd tier of QBs in that category), but save 1 dumb play, he actually didn't make a ton of poor decisions.

Sounds like a case of a coach forcing the scheme onto the players instead of building a scheme around the players.

Kind of, but also not.

The player Stefanski was building the scheme around was Nick Chubb.

Agree with this comment - however - building around the RB position seems to me like a very bad idea with injury and longevity issues.

I would think that if you pay a guy 50-60million per season, you ask him, "how do you want the offense to run?"

Yep.

Here’s a boatload of money and cap space. Now hand the ball off.

Maybe the plan was to get there.... but last year Watson was full of rust, and he was this season as well. Meanwhile, Chubb was a top 2 RB in the league.

Go look in the NFC right now.... the top 2 teams are built around the run game setting up the pass (49ers and Eagles).

The 2-0 Bucs have no run game. So... what do you say to them apples?
