Default Past Players, New Cards

Is there a consensus regarding older players on new designs? Big Fouts fan, but the stuff from his day was limited.

Seems the perfect case for collecting for enjoyment and not $

I collect a retired player who shows up in modern sets, and I like that. I stopped watching football a few years ago so I could care less about modern players, so discovering that my old retired player is still being produced has reconnected me to the hobby I love. My only complaint--I just wish there weren't SO MANY variations.

I love seeing Legacy HOF players in updated products. Especially in uniforms you don't immediately associate the player with. Once in a while, the card companies get it right.

One of my most prized cards in the PC is a #'d /10 Jerome Bettis in Rams uniform auto. It seems like 99% of his autos are in a Steelers uniform, so finding a legit auto of him in the Old School Rams uniform is like finding a unicorn.

I like the on card autos of retired guys in newer sets. Not a huge fan of the massive rainbows. I wish they would limit it to golds/blacks/etc and make the chase a little harder.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. I'm not sure why, but I have been on the fence about this for a while. This is just for fun anyway. As time goes by, it gets harder and harder to resist. I like the way the Chargers uniforms look on chrome finish cards, and to be able to get good looking cards of the players I grew up with for not a lot is a fun bonus. I like some of the cards of the 70s and early 80s, but the airbrushing and blah shots just don't do it for me. I have most of Fouts' older stuff, including some autos so I guess the other part of this is looking for something else of his to collect.

I have some modern cards of older players, but I very much prefer a vintage original of the older player. I'd much rather have an original Larry Bird rookie over a /1 Larry Bird National Treasures from 2022, for example.

I'm the same way. I'm just pretty close to out of vintage original to collect for the players I'm looking at.

Personally, I'm not a fan of older/retired players in the new sets. But as long as there is a market for it, they'll keep making them.

I like it. There has always been sets like Classics and UD Legends that had a ton of retired players. I think moderation is they key. Collectors will most likely value an auto from their playing days more, but that doesn’t mean they should stop signing. A retired player having 100+ parallels in a modern Prizm release is absurd. I like the idea of small rainbows for them.

I'm not a fan. Same retired players in each set, it seems. Those spots could be used for current players. Plus, for me, the it factor just isn't there when the player isn't currently in the league.

I was a big Jevon Kearse fan and my only PC is his 1999 rookies.

That being said, it’s cool he’s in newer products but I feel bad for those paying hundreds a box and hit his autograph for the box hit.

You're right about that! I may pick up a few Fouts singles on ebay from new products, but no way would I ever pay up to bust wax hoping for anything.

The old guys on new cards seem to sell pretty well online, in terms of singles prices to modern players

Absolutely hate it. I understand throwing a few hall of fame players in the set for hits like autos but for singles and parallels it bloats the product with cards that are essentially worthless.

Thanks. I looked back in my Excel spreadsheet and saw that I only paid $25 for it in 2018. The hobby was much, much different back then. Sadly, it's no longer a 'hobby'. Those days are over.

When I re-entered the hobby and was still "super collecting" Steve Young I thought it was great but the endless 1/1's and billion parallels is what inspired me to sell off my Youngs and focus on just PSA Niners rookies and some inserts here and there.

I did like it when deep cut Jesse Sapolu got a card a year ago or so - an autograph, no less, but do I need Jerry Rice in every single release ever?

No. I do not.

I can't stand that the biggest names of old are in every single set. John Elway had 672 individual cards including about 150 1/1s in 2021. I'd much rather each set have another active player than yet another John Elway card. I feel like nearly every set now has retired players included. Sprinkle a couple (and different ones please) in just a few sets and focus the rest of the cards on active players!!

I would feel worse getting a 5th round lineman sticker auto who printed his initials, and is out of the league before the set was released.

I’d be down for them to start making McNair cards again

I wanted to revive this thread and see if anyone's thoughts have shifted over the past year or whether they've picked up on industry trends.

Recently, I was trying to locate a nice Rod Woodson card and ended up just grabbing a PSA 10 of his Score '89 rookie. However, being a junk-wax card and one that is completely void of long-term value, I wanted to grab another card that I felt was more satisfying. So, after seeing the numerous Panini Flawless, National Treasures, Immaculate, etc., I weighed this exact question posed by the OP.

I ended up just going with his 1997 Skybox Impact Rave since I couldn't find a better 90s insert or parallel at the time.

It's a nice card with /150 limited run, but I still find myself frequently looking at all these modern Panini releases - with their museum-like aesthetics - and wondering if they will actually hold or increase in value, or merely just for player-collecting the old legends.

I feel like more Rod Woodson fans will die than there will be new people who join the "hobby" that would be interested in that card, so I don't think there will be an increase in value with almost all that stuff.

hahaha sadly, but probably true. Perhaps Woodson wasn't the best example.

This is a little darker that how I would have expressed it, but you're not wrong.

My 14 year old knows Jerry Rice, just from popular culture.

He does not know Rod Woodson.

Keep that in mind when spending money on retired vets.
