Few months going to be in Maui. First and maybe only time I will ever be in Hawaii. Already have going to Pearl Harbor planned. I have been suggested to try road Hana, wahle watching, hiking trails, and zipline over forrest. I will be there for about a week. Anything I did not mention that I should look into doing?

I’d spend one day just laying on the beach.

Drink Kona coffee while eating handfuls of macadamia nuts. That's how I picture everyone in Hawaii..

Take a boat to Molokini to go snorkeling (if the weather is cooperative).
Get macadamia nut pancakes at The Gazebo restaurant. |

yep, the southern route back was crazy. definitely don’t light a joint of hawaiian weed pulling out of hana thinking you’re not going to be driving 6” away from a cliff with a 60-foot drop to the ocean with no guardrails for an hour ![]() biking down from the top of the mountain at dawn is fun. spend a day in lahaina for sure, jump off the black rock into the ocean. kapalua bay is a little beach that has ridiculous snorkeling. whenever i think of the pacific ocean, my image is the water on the beach behind the airport. gotta walk through a park/parking lot (there were a million stray cats and some local homeless i’d assume), but… man. the blue. flight was like 10pm so that was the last thing i did so it was like an hour before dusk. just beautiful. |

Absolutely this, the views on the other side are incredible. Take a stroll down Front St. Walk down to the Dragon's Teeth. Drive up to Haleakala. Kaanapali Beach. IO Valley. We used to spend 10 weeks there every year but haven't been since 2019 and I really miss it. I'm not sure about food recommendations, not sure what places survived the pandemic. If Star Noodle is still open that is a place to def try.

in addition to other suggestions I'd suggest the Old Lahaina Luau, snorkeling at turtle cove at Makena Beach (one of the least rocky beaches I encountered while there too), and a sunset boat cruise.
I also enjoyed going to Maui Goat Yoga. As far as food, Kimo's and Fleetwoods were two of my favorite dinners. Everyone recommends Mama's Fish House, but its impossible to get in, and we didn't go. |

I wouldn’t waste a full day driving to Hana. It’s a painfully slow 10 mph drive waiting for your vans to clear before you can pass through as it’s single lane in several spots. I would much rather drive around and explore the different beaches. Try surfing, definitely go snorkeling or scuba if you’re a diver, surfing, golfing, offshore fishing or just relax by the pool or beach. I’ve been to Maui at least 8 times, and the other islands at least once. Maui and Kauai are my favorite islands. It’s expensive so be prepared.

The snorkeling tours are great with the sea turtles around you. I remember doing a guided cacao farm tour and chocolate tasting, which was fun. Haleakala National Park was a nice relaxing place for me to go. The luau was the highlight of the vacation for me. However, it could be that Jeff Foxworthy sat right next to me.

Sounds like you've already booked a hotel, but my recommendation is rent a condo or a house. Much more freedom and fun IMO and experience when we travelled to Kauai and Oahu.
Grab groceries and wine/booze at Costco. Fresh veg and fruit at farmer's markets (there is a whole 'blessing' ritual that is kinda cool). Don't scrimp on the coffee- you get what you pay for and it's worth it. As noted above a luau is a must- traditional kalua pig is a great experience. Car rental is pretty much necessary so get a convertible. Food/shrimp/ice/poke/japa trucks and stands are great for roadside eats and treats. DON"T bring home any lava rock, sand, stones or other natural resource souvenirs that you might scavenge- bad luck will ensue!

I lived in Maui for 2 years and can provide some insight.
Places to go: -Lahaina (front street). Tons of shops and whale watching tours. -Mackena Beach -Maui Ocean Center Aquarium -Road to Hana -Drive to the upcountry (very close to Kahalui) -Kihei beaches (Kam 1, 2 3) -Wailea (south of Kiehi. its literally a desert) -Iao Valley rain forest. SUPER cool! -Kahalui (main city. Typical mall and shopping) -Rent a scooter and ride it around kihei or lahaina -Watch surfers -Haleakala mountain. Beautiful view |

The drive up Haleakala is pretty crazy, especially on a cloudy morning. You literally drive above the clouds. It’s very surreal. The surface of the volcano looks like Mars and it is absolutely massive. Driving through eucalyptus forests both ways is cool too. Gets in your nostrils.
If you’re a golfer, play Wailea. It’s incredible. |
