In my experience, as soon as they were negotiating in earnest, and may have even had an LOI (according to Eisner this was “within weeks” of the Fanatics license announcement in August), both sides would have started to do “day 1”’planning.

The companies would have likely been locked in a dance, sharing information and operations and other details under NDA. Perhaps using a clean team to execute the project management and keep certain pieces confidential / maintain information barriers where needed.

Fanatics is an experienced acquirer and I bet has a pretty formal process pre and post deal to ensure success.

Now we're talking! I agree with your points. What's not clear to me, though, is how detailed the information about upcoming releases shared pre-acquisition was. It may be that the information was in plain sight in the clean room and Fanatics didn't focus in on it, or it may be that the information wasn't all there and they didn't ask for it.

Either way, in my experience, the more nuanced an issue is, and the less important it is to the fundamentals of the transaction, the less attention it gets.

With that in mind, I don't think it's far-fetched that either Fanatics didn't think to look at the actual numbering or didn't ask for it. (Also, to someone else's point, there's a limit to preacquisition coordination. It may not have touched checklists.) There definitely haven't been enough big card transactions for lawyers to know all the things they need to care about.

Given all the above, I continue to think it's plausible that it was an intentional choice by Topps. (Which is separate from whether it's a RC or not.) Further, the apparent decision to cancel the release of Bowman Heritage -- a product that seems like it was ready to ship -- suggests that new leadership had concerns. Maybe it was about something like releasing 2021 cards in 2022 (which, IMHO, is a valid concern), but I can't imagine they'd eat the cost out of that concern alone.

Am I reading this correctly? Is Beckett calling #215 Wander’s RC as well? Unlike the other “RC”s in the series 1 checklist, they have it in parentheses, which is odd.

No, they said in their original article that they'd tag BB50 as "RC" and then his 2022 logo cards as "(RC)" to denote that yes, they recognize there's a logo, but no, it isn't what they consider a rookie card.

They specifically mention Wander in the description of the set:

And then there’s the case of Wander Franco. All signs pointed to him having his first MLB base Rookie Card in 2022 Topps Series 1. But they made the platinum 1/1 card first. The rest are all parallels.
