Default Ebay partnering with CSG to authenticate cards

Article:
https://techcrunch.com/2022/01/25/eb...h-750-or-more/

Online marketplace eBay is once again expanding its authentication service, this time to include support for authenticating valuable trading cards. The service will now be able to authenticate cards worth at least $750 from collectible card games, as well as sports and other non-sports cards, the company said. By the middle of this year, this service will grow to include graded, autograph and patch cards sold for $250 and higher, as well. These additions broaden eBay’s ability to assure its customers of the authenticity of high-value items, including the sneakers, watches and handbags the company is already able to authenticate.

The eBay website notes the trading card authentications are being handled by experts at the Certified Collectibles Group’s affiliates, CGC Trading Cards and Certified Sports Guaranty (CSG).

Pretty interesting move that I didn't really see coming. But it makes complete sense with how much money is involved these days, consumers need more protection from fakes and scams. The other big piece to me is that CSG was selected as the authentication partner. One would think the partnership and visibility would help their brand and increase their place in the hobby.

Seems like a solid move all around. Hopefully it doesn't lead to an increase in selling fees.

Ebay's official page about this:
https://pages.ebay.com/authenticity-guarantee/

For sellers:
https://pages.ebay.com/authenticity-guarantee-seller/

FAQ for Trading Cards:
https://pages.ebay.com/authenticity-...ds-seller/#faq

At first I thought this was kind of a weird move and not really useful for most people. However, after reading about it a bit, I think this will be a huge deal for sellers more than buyers. From what I gather, you can now actually choose to have no returns and as long as CSG authenticates your card then the sale is considered final at that point. Even if you have returns, then the buyer has to return the card in the tamper proof case in order to have the return accepted. If this works out like I'm assuming, then I'll have way more confidence selling expensive cards on eBay again.

It’s an all-around terrible move. The wait to receive your $250 cards should be nice and long when CSG is trying to authenticate 100k+ items a month.

I'd be interested to know what percentage of sales are over that $250 mark. That'll give a good idea of how manageable this is from a volume perspective.

Here's what they are shooting for. Let's see if they can stick to it:

What is the estimated delivery time for Authenticity Guarantee items?
The authenticator will inspect the item within one to two business days after receiving it. Once verified, the authenticator will ship the item directly to the buyer with four-day or less tracked delivery.

And after you wait an extra 2 weeks you have to sign for it. Not a good move at all.

I wonder about cards CSG doesn't grade/authenticate...what do they do when they get a Star Michael Jordan sent to them? I know a couple guys came from Beckett, but CSG isn't messing with Star cards.

CSG has the money to try and dominate the market, and it appears they are going for it. It will be interesting to see if they can keep up...
I'm not a fan of Blackstone, so I can't say I'm rooting for their success.

Do I think they can authenticate 100k shipments a month within 2 business days? No. And it’s not 100k cards. If I sell a bulk lot of 100 Bowman prospects for $250, are they going to unsleeve and resleeve every single card to make sure the condition is appropriate?

There are so many other problems with this as well. Take today’s Flawless release for example. So you’re telling me a $25k Lamelo RPA has to go to CSG for authentication? If I’m the buyer, I do not want some CSG intern touching my $25k card.

As long as it ain't PSA, we gucci.

I welcome our new drab green overlords. Hope they really push for the slabbed crown while PSA works tirelessly to clear a 537 year backlog.

Are they going to send a card in a CSG holder to CSG to authenticate?
Seems like a brilliant idea

What percentage of cards sold on eBay are fake? Are they also checking for altered cards?

They are looking for fraud as well, so I think that would fall in the category. And if they detect fraud, they will have it removed from the marketplace. Who knows what that means.

What would happen if a seller sends in a $5000 raw card that is authentic, but has a crease that wasn't disclosed in the listing? It sounds like you can't return any cards that are authenticated through this so I feel like people are going to use it as a tool to try to unload lower-grade raw cards.

I believe that CSG is not only confirming that the card is authentic, but also that it matches the condition specified. If it doesn't match I don't know if they just send back to the seller and refund or if they give the buyer an option or something. If/when CSG misses some condition problem or actually damages the card in packaging or shipping, I'd assume the buyer would have to take it up with eBay directly at that point.
