Fun list.
Gives the guys in the 70s+ a chance of being a GOAT in a category

Benito Santiago wore 09 just to make this list some day. And yet, he was forgotten.

Great topic, OP.

There aren't many options at #71, but I will respectfully argue that Josh Hader should take that spot over Wade Davis, based upon the following facts:

1- Both players have worn #71 for the same period of time--2017-2021--and Hader has been the superior player by far in that time frame.

2- To be fair, Davis has had a good 13-year career, with 3 All Star nods, an NL saves crown, and a World Series win. But his period of true dominance (which includes two of those three All Star nods and the WS win) occurred when he was with the Royals, wearing #17. Since he left the Royals and began wearing #71, he has one All Star nod and the NL saves crown, as well as more total saves than Hader in the same time frame (93 vs. 69), but he also has 2 seasons with ERAs over 8.00, not including the current season, in which his ERA is again over 8.00 as of this writing.

3- In the same 5-year period of wearing #71 (his entire major league career so far), Hader has 2 All Star nods, an NL saves crown, 2 NL Reliever of the Year awards, and a spot on MLB's inaugural All-MLB 1st team as the (only) Relief Pitcher (2019). The same year that Davis led the NL in saves (2018), Hader was selected as the NL Reliever of the Year. The difference in saves is accounted for by differences in usage: Hader was a late-inning fireman who racked up holds rather than saves in his first couple years. He leads Davis in holds from 2017-2021, 39 to 1.

Maybe it's fair to say that Hader has to play a little longer before he could be named the best ever #71, but his competition is not super tough, and he's done everything he can in terms of dominance in the time he has played so far. My 2 pennies!

I would have never guessed that Josh Hader vs. Wade Davis for the battle of #71 would have prompted the most thoughtful post since the OP.

As a Jack Clark fan, I would like to point out that he wore 00 with the Padres in 1990. While I don't feel good that I have to argue that one of my favorite players is better than a mascot, I am willing to do so.

I gotta go with bench at 5 also. It's not disrespectful regarding pujols, and I am biased, but bench was also the greatest catcher of all time.

Came here to say the same thing - of course I'm a little biased being a Hader supercollector.

Is it just me, or do other people not really associate players in 2021 with their number anymore?

Off memory, I think of all the big names-Ruth 3, Musical 6. And I remember most of the guys of the 90s/2000s--

Bonds 25, Pujols 5, Jeter 2, Griffey 24, Ichiro/Randy 51.

I honestly couldn't name most of the numbers anymore. Trout is 27. Judge is 99. Not sure what number Tatis, Soto, Degrom, etc are. Just doesn't feel like they're marketed by number anymore.

But the fad of wearing baseball jerseys around also seems to be over so maybe I just don't visualize it as much

Degrom is 48 and Alonso is 20 off the top of my head.

I think people still know the numbers of guys they collect, due to the jersey number premium on numbered cards. And people know the numbers of major players on the teams they watch.

I know Juan Soto is number 22, because I collect him and watch his team. I couldn't tell you what number Acuna or Tatis wear, because I don't collect them and rarely watch them.

Default Yogi over Joe for number 8

I hate the Yankees, but this isnt close. Number 8 belongs to Yogi. Who would you build your team around? 10 World titles as a player.

Yogi

18× All-Star (1948–1961², 1962²)
13× World Series champion (1947, 1949–1953, 1956, 1958, 1961, 1962, 1969, 1977, 1978)
3× AL MVP (1951, 1954, 1955

Joe

10× All-Star (1966, 1970, 1972–1979)
2× World Series champion (1975, 1976)
2× NL MVP (1975, 1976)
5× Gold Glove Award (1973–1977)
Silver Slugger Award (1982)
Cincinnati Reds No. 8 retired
Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame
Houston Astros Hall of Fame

Try out some 2013 Topps Baseball and you will learn a lot of uniform #s for that time real quick.

Also, the teams with uniform #s on the front of the uni make them more memorable.

I'm struggling with #31. Mike Piazza vs. Greg Maddux. Two hall of famers so there isn't likely a wrong choice. I'm a lifelong Dodger fan and Piazza is one of my favorite all time players. Maddux is the guy that did the most with the least. He wasn't huge, he wasn't intimidating, he wouldn't blow people away but he was crazy effective and accurate. I can't decide.

Maddux and I don't even think it's close. Piazza is obviously great but he's in a different tier than Maddux IMO.
