Default 1994 Upper Deck World Cup

Been thinking about busting some of these....has anyone busted any of this recently? If so, do the cards come out gradable....I.e cards sticking together in bricks? Any input is appreciated. Thx

I used to sell these on eBay many years ago (maybe 15 or so). Even then i often got complaints about these cards sticking together so i completely stopped selling them. I had one full case left.
Recently i started busting them to see what i could salvage and it is really hit and miss. Some boxes are ok where as others are complete bricks. I have about 7 left to complete.
If you are going to buy these i would suggest contacting the seller before hand letting them know about this and if this is the case with a box you buy will they refund.
Hope this helps..

Sorry i should also add, the centering on these cards is usually really good so if you don't get cards sticking together you should be good with grading them. I am pretty sure i have a couple of the Luis Figo at PSA now..

I've opened up a decent number of these packs in the past, and yeah, it's pretty hit or miss in terms of bricking and card condition.

I think there's a Michael Jordan card in the set too, if I remember correctly.

Yeah, the "Honorary Captains" subset had Jordan and other athletes from different sports, I think mainly people who were under contract with Upper Deck back then, like Gretzky, Reggie Jackson, and so on. I vaguely remember Russell Maryland from the Dallas Cowboys being one of them, too, which was kind of an odd choice, given the stature of the others in the group.

There were two different sets in 1994. The first one had just four of the Captain cards, and they weren't fancy like chase cards. They featured Jordan, Gretzky, Montana, and Reggie Jackson.

The ones in the second set were much fancier and looked like chase cards with gold foil accents. It was also a bigger set with 10 cards including (different) cards of the 4 above plus Maryland, Drew Bledsoe, Mantle, Dan Marino, Calbert Cheaney, and Gordie Howe.

They also have Spanish versions and possibly other languages, too.

I remember getting a few boxes of each set when new and I think I have both Jordans, although I haven't looked at them in a long, long time.

Pretty sure that one is from 1993 UD Preview.

But yeah I've opened a few boxes of 94, and they were bricked.

There were so many versions/variations of this set that your head will spin.

Let us know how you go?

Oh yeah, Upper Deck had multiple language issues for their basketball cards of that time (as the sport was really starting to catch on Europe) so it was a no-brainer they'd release their soccer sets the same way, in even more languages.

OK, thanks. '93 was Preview and 94 was Contenders, right?

I opened my boxes back then, so no issues, but certainly those sets were made right smack dab in the middle of the time-period where bricking is now most commonly seen. I noticed it first with some Marvel cards from 1998 that were already sticking in the packs by 2000, despite being properly stored. I remember telling fellow collectors then they should a) open any boxes from the past 7-8 years whose cards were heavily UV coated on both sides, and b) to store sets of opened cards from those kinds of sets loosely in their storage boxes, as the cards could still brick even out of the wrappers if they were too tightly packed together.

The 1993 Set had The HC subset( Jordan dunking) with the white boarder that was sp and the "gold" boarderless HC cards that were ssp

I was delighted to see the Mia Hamm card is $40+ raw as I made at least 3-4 sets of these with her in it, and I would've penny-sleeved any doubles of her, so I should have another couple of singles. I saw there was a Future Stars card of a guy named Luis Figo (who I have to admit having never heard of) that does pretty well. I should have one or two of those. Once I sorted those from the packs, I pretty much left them alone all this time.

Crazy that over a quarter century has passed so quickly.
I sure could see the numbers when sorting cards a lot easier back then!

I have been selling the Luis Figo for a few weeks now for on average $60.00 AUD. He is by far the most popular card from this set although Dennis Bergkamp also gets some love.

Thanks for all the feedback everyone....had a feeling the bricking was going to be an issue so will not venture into busting as I would be doing it with the goal of grading.

Depends on the pack price I think. There are a lot of places that carried these packs at one time and sell them for a buck or less in the clearance bins. If you can look at these loose packs and shift them around with your fingers, you can feel if they are bricked or not.

With the Mia Hamm at PSA 7 going for triple digits, you can't really lose. Also, searching for collections/piles of cards may be another way to go.
