Accept the fact that Todd Van Poppel isn’t going to make it in The Show, and seek a new Prospect to invest in.....

As always, buy singles and work on a couple serial numbered sets. First set of the year for me is the Heritage red chrome /372s. Getting a late start this year.

Looking forward to buying cards in real life as opposed to varying quality of product shots online. I don’t think much is gonna change, as we saw in the recent card show pics. I think a lot of people are back in the hobby for good. There’s also too much opportunity in an unregulated market. If the prices bottom out, they’ll be scooped back up again and we’ll be back where we started.

i think i've found a good rhythm for myself. during covid i did a full circle of losing my job, going on unemployment, and then managing to find a better job and getting financial stability again. with that, ive been able to focus on what i really want to be collecting, and have enjoyed seeing higher sale prices on the cards ive moved in the past 6 weeks. ive been working on a stricter pc and have seen my costs go way down as my collecting style went from must-have-anything-cool to focused on the players im collecting only, and getting nice pieces for those select few.
as far as strategy going forward, i dont see myself ripping any wax through the end of the year, with the exception of series 2 and update. with the madness of prices skyrocketing, im sticking with flagship only, building a set for my nephew and keeping extra rookies and pc players i hit in there. im selling anything hit wise that i cant gift to friends, and picking up singles of pc guys from other products that are ripped by people still buying and ripping wax. id rather not gamble on boxes when i can use that money to go directly to who i want from those products secondary. maybe if prices loosen up a bit next year ill grab some wax for fun rips but i dont see that happening for a long time.

This. Barely buying any wax in the last year, only if I can find it at MSRP, and most of the wax I did buy is still sealed. Been buying mostly singles, and even that I have focused to just 3 players I PC and actually enjoy watching them play, and of those I have focused to buying serial numbered or refractored cards that look cool/will hold value. Buy singles to hold and enjoy. Buy wax to flip sealed. Ripping wax is only for fun and is rarely done anymore. Also I have been telling myself to sell off these stacks of cards I have accumulated over the last few years that aren't my PC players, maybe this year I will get around to that...

Buy a random blaster once or twice a month, buy a couple packs a month at the LCS, and put what I am not spending on cards into learning how to play billiards again after a 20 year break.

Singles only, autos of players from ~2000 and earlier, no more new stuff or hunting down new stuff. Very specific and focused on cards/players I want. Organize cards I have and sell, sell, sell what I don’t absolutely enjoy having in collection.

Other than the 4 boxes of Topps Big League I pre-ordered, it will probably be singles only of Yankees.

Selling everything that's non-PC. I collect 1 raw base card of every rookie and put them together as a set every year. Any other card that isn't a Blue Jay, a Griffey or a flagship base rookie is being sold. I liquidated about 70% of my stuff already and will continue throughout this summer.
Box prices are just too high, singles have inflated to where every player is priced as a HOF'r and retail is non existent in my area. I'm not a bubble guy but I don't like what I think the future holds, so I'm going to push hard to pay off my mortgage in the next 5 years. |

Buying singles of cards I like and trying to buy my yearly boxes at or near release (Flagship, Heritage, A&G). Definitely cutting back on hobby boxes due to crazy price increases, and retail is nowhere to be found.
The money saved should allow me to buy more singles. Regarding the market itself, may unload a Kobe Spectra auto and a few Brady rookies I’ve been sitting on. Honestly though, I should’ve sold the Brady’s back in February. |

Avoid cards that annoy me at any and all costs - ugly photo, ugly design, streaky autograph, greening - irrespective of the price or market demand Buy the card not the grade Buy players that are already established |

Right now, I'm on cruise control. I'm not currently looking to buy anything solely for investment purposes, nor am I seeking anything particular high end/expensive. Now that the season's already started, I'm ready to just let the dice roll - with popcorn in hand
- and see what happens. On a side note, I've recently found small joys in rediscovering classic oddball which has opened up an entirely different world for me. I don't know whether to post my recent gatherings in the April pick-ups thread or to start an entirely new thread on these all it's own. But they are cool, seldom seen (if not downright rare at times), and best of all, (usually) inexpensive pick-ups. That being said, I certainly don't envision myself buying a bunch of oddball cards as my "hobby strategy for over the next 12 months" though. I'll likely just go back to buying more Victor Robles cards to add to the growing collection. |
