My theory for Project 70 and Pardee's popularity is that there's a spectrum of "cardness" for P70 cards. It ranges from "pretty much just a normal baseball card with a different border" (Infinite Archives, Undefeated) on one end, to "this isn't a baseball card" (Action Bronson) on the other.
Thus far, Pardee's cards have hit the sweet spot for most people where there's enough "cardness" to be aesthetically pleasing, but also enough "artness" for it to be different. |

Also, Pardee is like the art equivalent of highly processed foods like donuts or ice cream. Each element of his cards (baseball, horror, sci fi, comics, GPK, late '80s nostalgia, neon) is good by itself. But, combine them together in a realistic, easily digestible image, then biologically, we haven't evolved to handle so much awesomeness at once and it blows our mind and we want more and more. The NY Times had an article recently on how addictive ice cream is, but they didn't make the connection to art: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/02/18/w...ction-fat.html |

Side note for those hoping for a Warren Spahn, in looking at Getty images, there may be hope instead for a card in the Sports Illustrated set. Thought this looked like a good pick.
Another side note, the Vides Munson arrived yesterday with chipping/smudges front and back from that thicker black print. Didnt notice it on any P2020 cards, so hopefully just bad luck on this one. But took it as a sign to pass on the Mantle. ![]() Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk |

I don't think anyone can "win" project 70 given how many variables there are per artist. It's a bit different from P2020 where it was almost like "who can make the best Jeter?" It's more of a year-long gallery viewing for 51 artists. There's a definite pecking order emerging, but there's a lot of cards left for artists to make their mark. Also, I wouldn't take social media comments as a judgment of how good a card is. People were sending Action Bronson fire emojis for that nasty "Ricky" Henderson. |

He "won" P70 after 1 card? That's ridiculous. Let's see all 20. For the new artists, I personally like Chuck Styles and Distortedd's first two more than Pardee's. I know I'm in the minority but I don't collect to flip so it makes no difference to me about agreeing with the masses. Also loved OMA's P2020 set. Most here dislike him tremendously.

It’s always amusing to me when folks try and figure out why or how other folks like something. There are different seasons for different people. My philosophy is that if you like something then more power to you. I am not going to question why just because it doesn’t match what I believe.
There are people that like artists that overuse photoshop. I certainly don’t understand it but that’s ok because it’s not really for me to understand. |

Right now I'm getting mantle and the trout, but I'm still not sold on a full pardee run.

I think Pardee had one of the best 'round 1' cards for sure, and the trout is a worthy followup (I rank his Acuna higher than his Trout). Great for him that another artist is conceding to him already, and not saying he wont have the best set at the end of this, but there's still a LONG way to go, not just for him but for the other artists. If you like the trout, you should buy it. The few bucks you could save in the aftermarket isn't worth denying yourself the purchase from topps.

More power to those people who are collecting Jeff Staple. I just don't see it at all. Another Munson and Piazza....yawn.

I read that his first 5 cards will be his Subway Series subset, but I don't think they all will be. He'll probably do two more Yankees and one more Met. I'm guessing it'll be Leiter, and I'm crossing my fingers "not Mike Hampton not Mike Hampton not Mike Hampton not Mike Hampton ".
This one, I want to hate, but it's pressing all the right buttons: Piazza as a Met, 1975 design, prominent Mr Met. |

Using Photoshop does not define what the art looks like. The misconception is that "photoshopped" artwork like we think about is just collaged/edit photos, but you'd be surprised at who is and isn't using Adobe Photoshop, and how much. Every artist's process is different and saying it looks "photoshopped" is just silly in 2021 IMO. I'm passionate about this because I am a physical / digital artist and I use whatever tools I want on any given day, and I never want to let the tool define my style. |

I imagine that if you were growing up in the Bronx in the late '70s, Munson is El Hombre. I like the card. It's not as amusing but better composed than his Yelich card. My only problem with it is that I need a BIG rookie gold cup on my 1971 Munsons. That gold cup is a phallic symbol. Whip it out and make it LARGE. |
