Default Who do you guys use to ship an expensive card ? And how?

Just wondering what company do you guys use when shipping an expensive card and how do you go about protecting it. I’m talking about a card value with say a 20k potential. Appreciate any thoughts or ideas.

If I don't know the seller I am flying there.
If I ship: USPS Registered Mail.

Registered mail, just expect to get a lot of funny looks and "are you SURE that's the value" of the package when shipping.

Is the brown paper tape needed to seal up the box to ship registered? Anyone have a resource for that stuff?

Yes. I literally just mailed my first registered package ever on Saturday. They gave me that brown tape, a sponge, and a bottle of water to activate the adhesive on the tape. I think places like Office Depot & Staples sell the brown tape and I'll definitely be looking into buying my own to get the packages ready beforehand.

Thanks - I was a shipping manager for a bit, and we had a water tape machine which did all the steps for you and spit out pre-measured strips. Wish I still worked there!

I buy it at U-haul for $2.50 a roll. I ship everything to PSA registered because you can insure it up to 50k.

Thanks! That's not bad at all. Will check the local uhaul one of these days, to have it in case I need it.

really? I haven’t shipped registered in a few years but it never used to be that way. how incredibly time-consuming for the clerk and people waiting in line.

I ship fed ex overnight

Get Collect Insure and ship whatever Express service you feel most comfortable with. The premiums you pay for the year will easily cover the cost of shipping insurance.

Registered mail can be a disaster. It can take weeks to get there because it will sit in one location waiting for a signature to move onto the next location. It's cheaper and it eventually gets there but with much worry. Ship FedEx Express and save yourself the hassle.

Can you ship registered and priority to speed it up or does it just take longer no matter what with registered mail?

How is fedex about insuring. This is a card I forgot I had came from a 100$ box and now it’s worth quite a bit I don’t have an invoice if they were to lose it this is the part that always worries me.

My premium was under 0.5% of my declared value for my collection.

How does it work. Lets say I ship a $50k card via fed ex and something happens. I file a claim and they automatically pay it while they take care of the back end?

Have you ever had to make a claim?

I just signed up, so have not had to file a claim. I trust others who use the company for much more valuable collections than me, and they have spoken very highly of the service when needing to file claims.

I have USAA for my homeowner’s insurance and their options for collectibles insurance was not going to be adequate. With the hobby booming, people need to seriously consider insuring their collections. Don’t want to lose a collection worth a house to a fire, theft, etc.

I would only mail it if I knew and trusted the recipient. Having said that - I would use FedEx next day delivery with signature/insurance.

i have often thought to do this. have you ever had to file a claim? or know anyone who has? if so, how did it go? that's the one thing i've always wondered about collectinsure -- in case of a claim, do you get your money in a timely manner.

edit - oh, i see you just signed up. i did not read your last post before posting.

I feel like a big concern of many sellers is a buyer who says he did not receive an item when he actually did. Does collectors insurance cover that?

In my experience, USPS insurance sucks. Sent a bulk sub to PSA a couple years back. Had cards I pulled from packs, other stuff vintage I had set back for years, etc. Package gets lost on it's way to PSA. I file a claim and include a copy of the packing list and values I had for each card. They denied it telling me that I needed a receipt for each card to show what I had paid for it to establish a value. Shouldn't really matter since I paid for their damn insurance anyhow. Biggest joke was that they knew it didn't get to the destination and they didn't even refund me the price of my shipping. Not sure what good it does paying for it when sending to PSA unless you actually have a receipt for the individual card.
Now, my saving grace was about a month later, the order was logged at PSA. Apparently the label must have gotten ripped off or something and they found the packing slips inside and got the package to it's destination. To this day, the tracking number still shows "in transit".
