It's not ignorant. It is what it is. If totals in China or Italy were significantly lower, our country wouldn't be shut down. Of course totals matter. It didn't just hit us a day or two ago. I feel like people keep waiting for it to spike really, really high.

It is when you have the information and see whats going on elsewhere. The numbers start somewhere. We are shut down to help keep those numbers down. Less infected should mean less deaths which is a win

“There are only 60 deaths so it’s not a big deal” is 100% ignorant. If you use this as a reason to ignore the inevitable you are a fool.

In only 2 countries outside of China, really. Italy and Iran.

What is the inevitable?

While nearly every other first world country Is taking the same steps to avoid that outcome you think we shouldn’t?

It's not that simple. There is zero end game right now. I was reading an article about the German company that Trump allegedly tried to poach. They said they hoped to have a vaccine in months. Months!

"We are very confident that we will be able to develop a potent vaccine candidate within a few months," Menichella said in a statement.

Florian von der Muelbe, CureVac's chief production officer and co-founder, told Reuters last week that the company hoped to have an experimental vaccine ready by June or July so they could seek permission to start testing on humans."

Hoped .. to have an EXPERIMENTAL VACCINE ready .. by June or July .. to SEEK PERMISSION .. to START testing! Start!

I feel like the fact that we are 109 pages in before someone used this quote is more disheartening than the “it’s just a cold” naysayers.

The numbers are going to spike. It will be high, how high? Unknown. We aren't testing nearly enough to get the full scope. Our lockdown measures have been slow. Jewcer mentioned that Biogen conference. That is a great example. Whatever the current number is for positives and deaths add a zero on the end at a minimum. If we are at 3000 cases and 60 deaths. It will easy be 30,000 cases and 600 deaths before we are done. This is if we abide by lockdown procedures.

This is significantly worse than a normal as stated earlier in this thread.

But the testing goes both ways. Mortality rate is a big sticking point. But if we had the ability to test every single person, we're also likely seeing a lower mortality rate.

And 600 deaths is still a drop in the hat from flu season. 10x that and it's still half.

600 deaths are worth the panic we are seeing? Here are some death rates from the CDC.

Quote:
Heart disease: 647,457
Cancer: 599,108
Accidents (unintentional injuries): 169,936
Chronic lower respiratory diseases: 160,201
Stroke (cerebrovascular diseases): 146,383
Alzheimer’s disease: 121,404
Diabetes: 83,564
Influenza and pneumonia: 55,672
Nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, and nephrosis: 50,633
Intentional self-harm (suicide): 47,173
Now tell me why we should panic and shut down our entire society over 600 deaths? Even if it reached the same deaths as the flu last year, 12,000, it is a drop in the bucket compared to the above. But please let's destroy our economy and way of life.

How many of those can you catch from someone else???????

Would you rather be safer or would you rather let it run rampant and dwarf those numbers?

There is a reason the experts are telling us to do what they are telling us to do.

You mean catch something that most of us are going to beat and recover from? This is where the panic is BS. There are people coming out saying they have survived this and what their symptoms were. If you listen to the media and some in this thread, you would think half of our population is going to die from this. I'm guessing that in the end, more Americans will not die from this than died from H1N1.

How many times does it need to be stated that the shutdown is preventative measure to not overburden our healthcare system?

Italy only has 1800 deaths, 24k confirmed cases and they are overburdened. They had less than 5 confirmed cases 3 weeks ago. We're simply trying to get out ahead of things.

We're going in circles here.

I am curious to see if there is a rise in heart attacks and suicides this year because of the stress people are feeling from whats going on and the fear that is being spread whether you feel it excessive or not.

It would probably be lower if this administration treated this the same way that administration did. Immediately calling it an emergency.

Yes many many people will survive it. The problem is we can’t handle the case load incoming and many deaths will have been avoidable. If we don’t do anything it will surely surpass that number though. That’s why every expert is saying we need to take the steps we started taking a few days ago.
