Everyone else is the far distance
Assuming he meant 1986, I think it should at least be taken into consideration (although I probably don't put 86 at #1).

By my count there are

11 HOF, 8 top 50, MJ

I’ll respond with my focus on modern cards. I consider vintage cards being anything from 1982 Topps and prior.

From an NBA fan I’ll take the 1996 draft class. The top tier of that draft class were generational talents who changed the course of their franchises forever. They will go down as some of the greatest players to ever play the game. There is more greatness in the 1996 draft class than there is is the 2003 draft class. Especially because Kobe was better than LeBron, but that’s another debate for another thread.

However, from an impact on the hobby perspective I’ll take the 2012 rookie class. Rookies drive the hobby each year and 2012 was a major shift in the hobby. It was the first year Panini seemed to really figure out the basketball market. There is no debating that the 1986, 1996 & 2003 products revolutionized the hobby. However, do the individual products that came out in those years have the same impact as the numerous ground breaking products of 2012-13. Prizm, Select, Immaculate & Flawless all debuted in 2012-13 plus there was the continued growth of NT RPAs, the Preferred Silhouette autos and multiple opportunities for a rookie Logoman. Absolute featured a base rookie card that was /199 and most were on-card. You had chances for on-card rookie autos in products as cheap as Threads and amazing patches in low end products such as Crusade and Brilliance. When you consider the quality and variety of the products, the number of HOFers that will be come from the 2012-13 rookie class and the revolutionary products that were introduced I would argue that from a hobby perspective the 2012-13 releases were the most significant modern release.

Lol at the old dudes in this thread unable to be subjective and say 1996 is the hobbies best year. (An argument can be made for 2003 due to price of LBJ stuff obviously)

In their defense, my original post was about players only. As far as sets and hobby innovation go, it would be difficult to pair a few standalone releases in 57, 61, and 86 to the sets that really propelled us forward in 96.

I think it really depends on if you mean when it released or what it has become. 1996-97 was a good one but Topps Chrome was not even a popular set upon release. I remember seeing boxes of this on clearance at Walmart. 1997-98 changed the game with numbered inserts and created the parallel craze. 1998-99 introduced us to Vince Carter and Jason Williams. It also built upon the parallels and really ever set Rookie cards were SP. both of those years cards were going crazy at the time of release. I cannot say the same for 96-97

I meant players. Take the sets and technology away and what yr of rookie cards boasted the best overall class of players.
