I believe some of Ruth's RBI's are 'unofficial'. I know they only started counting them at a certain time. But I remember hearing the other day how some of Ruth's RBI before that date are "counted".

So the 2000+ RBI Ruth number probably counts those, while the 1992 number does not.

I mean, sure, but the official MLB website clearly states the 2000+ number which is what we should go by.

So we are all on the same page... who are the official top 5 RBI all time leaders and how many does each have?

Official RBI stats were not recorded until the 1920 season. Over 200 of Ruths' RBIs could not be verified prior to this, due to varying accounts of what constituted a present day RBI. Based on this decision by MLB, Cap Anson never had an RBI (he's fourth with 2075).

Personally, I think Pujols has quite a ways to go to catch Ruth.

Yeah, Cap Ansons stats are all different. I remember on BR and maybe ESPN had his hit totals way different. Or maybe even on the Cubs page. I remember one he was well over 3k and maybe one he was below? Don't really remember.

In Anson's time, BBs were counted as hits for a few years. He was the "first" 3,000 hit member, then was re-evaluated for 2,998 hits when they took those away (and a few others). The following year, they have a few hits back to him to keep him in the 3K club. I'm not even sure what the official number is now.

Back on topic, let's go Pujols! 2K this weekend!

Solo home run for RBI #2000!

Third member of the 3000/600/2000 Club!

I was at the game in STL when he collected #1000 on a grand slam. Wish I could have been there today!

Congrats to The Machine!

Unbelievable feat. Who knows who will be next to hit 2,000. Dude just cemented himself as one of the top players of all time. Top 5 pushing it?

Yeah that's pushing it and this is coming from a Cards fan.

Ruth, Bonds, Mays, and Williams are pretty much the top 4 position players in whatever order you want to put them (Mays, Williams, Ruth, Bonds for me) so you have a lot of guys fighting for that 5th spot.

As great as Albert is I couldn't pick him for the 5th spot over Wagner, Musial, Aaron, or several other guys. I could see a pretty solid argument for him as a top 10 player all time though.

I do think he's the greatest first baseman of all time. He can stand with anyone offensively obviously and only Keith Hernandez was better defensively in my opinion.

As far as the next person to get to 2,000 RBIs? Probably no one. Miggy is the closest and he still needs more than 350 at age 36. Cano is next closest needing like 775 and he's also 36. I don't see either of them getting there.

My coworker just sent me pics from the game. She's off my Christmas card list now lol.

I'll never understand the need to say this

Why would it matter who you're a fan of? A legendary player just pulled off a legendary feat. It shouldn't matter what team you're a fan of.

(NOT singling you out because you see this type of post all the time from tons of people...just singling the comment itself out)

Albert Pujols is the best hitter of his generation. His 1st 10 years were absolutely ridiculous. His avg/power combo was nearly unparalleled in modern baseball, especially from a guy who didn't exactly leg out a lot of infield singles.
He was the catalyst for my 1st "return" to the hobby in 2000-2008. Watching he and Ichiro (and Mark freaking Prior) come in and basically dominate the league from day one was an exciting time to be in cards for sure. This was back when we had a healthy competitive card market with all 3 licencees(Topps/UD/Donruss-Leaf-Playoff)producing uniquely cool releases at every price point. A Game Used card was a big deal and a rookie auto even bigger! Most mid to upper tier products SP'd the base RCs(usually serial numbered) and they would fall like 1 or 2 per hobby box. In a lot of sets Pujols and Ichiro's RCs were SP'd even lower so you'd have 50 RCs #'d to 999 and those two would be even lower like 299/199/ or even 99(Leaf Limited?) Finding a numbered RC of one of those 2 in a pack was basically a case hit- and huge cause for celebratory high fives. If you can't tell from my wistful, nostalgic tones I kinda miss those days.
Simply put-Pujols is kinda the reason I enjoy this stuff.
