Sam Miller had a great article about the (uncreative) conventions of baseball nicknames. But I'm sure this is all common knowledge for all of the baseball lifers on this board...

Players Weekend is fun but I feel like it's mostly the MLB version of Rumshpringa. Since baseball is so button-up normally, the players are like "FINALLY, we don't have to be so stodgy." If the game was loosened up a bit in its base state, there wouldn't be the need for the over-the-top exuberance we saw this weekend. There's a happy medium somewhere in there.
