Ebay refund question

Buyer wants a refund today for an item I shipped several days ago Ground Advantage - tracking shows in transit still but delayed.

Shipped out by me Jan 31, tracking shows as "Running Behind, original estimate was Feb 2- Feb 6"

My question is if he opens the item not received case and I refund him today and then the item shows up let's say by EOW (I imagine it will......) what do I do then? Would I have to call eBay and tell them I refunded buyer but then item showed up so eBay will side with me or nah?

Of course I would like him to be patient for a few more days, that would be the ideal outcome for me as the seller.

You mention that buyer wants a refund today....I would never refund unless buyer does open the INR case, and I would not refund until the date that eBay tells you to resolve by. If there is any kind of movement in the tracking after the case is filed, the resolve by date gets extended. I don't know where you or the buyer live, but eBay has protections in place for sellers due to harsh weather in some areas of the country. If you or buyer live in certain areas, or the package has to pass thru certain areas, eBay will remove any negative feedback. When/if a case is filed, you usually have about 5 days to resolve....should be plenty of time for it to arrive if it is going to.

What you are suggesting is what I was thinking but wanted BO’s opinion. Thanks for that. Yeah I’m in MI, so obviously really bad weather and I’ve seen a ton of delays for me as buyer and seller.

Wow, never knew about the seller protections with weather.

Yeah if he opens the case I’ll wait until the three days or whatever the max is …

Just want to come in and second the opinion and decision. Make them file INR, wait until last possible day.

recently eBay made a slight change on INR. If refunded, then gets delivered eBay gives you your money back.

Jumping on here to ask similar advice...buyer opened INR case after the package has been bouncing around and is several days past the expected date. Buyer is asking for a partial refund and will keep the item when it arrives as using US Mail instead of UPS has wasted his time.

My thought was to respond with an explanation on shipping method listed and an apology for the delay caused by USPS, but not respond directly to the partial refund request and waiting to take any action until the time is almost up. The tracking has stalled but is close to its destination.

Thoughts?

I wouldn't explain anything. I would just say no refunds, the card is still in transit. If it's an ESE, refund the last day and block. If it's GA as long as it's showing tracking ebay shouldn't force the case to close, so just wait it out....and block.

I wouldn't offer a partial refund. I'd just apologize and politely respond that you have no control over shipping time, and hope that it arrives soon. If you get a negative, I'd reach out to eBay CS to remove it (for uncontrollable reasons) or respond to the negative feedback (so it shows with your feedback history) with an image of the conversation that shows how unreasonable the buyer is.
