Thanks for all the responses, my mate queried it with the store owner who basically said once opened it's no longer his problem, and an email sent to Panini got a response that they only guarantee 5 GU or Autos per box and that the box did meet that requirement.

Needless to say it's a sickening blow to someone who was already feeling down about things, the box was meant to be a bit of a pick-me-up (more like a kick them while they're down)

So if you don't get cards you like you get a free box? Logoman? Your money back? I'm honestly curious.
