Default Album pages question….

Awhile back I went through some albums of cards I had from the early 2000’s. I found that some of the cards with glossy surfaces such as topps chrome, had become stuck in the pages. When I was able to remove the cards it basically ruined them and took off the top layer of the cards. Is that something that can’t be avoided with time or was that older album pages and they are formulated and made different now?
