I've never submitted a card for grading, and am looking for suggestions.
The card is the "Pepper Girls" card from the 1980 Police Charlotte O's set (the one with the Ripken). It's in nice shape, maybe an 8 or better. ![]() It's so scarce (none listed in the Beckett Population Report, only 3 in the PSA Pop Report (graded at 3, 4, and 7)), and 2 in the SGC Pop Report (4 and 5) that it's hard to guesstimate the value, plus the value would be drastically different depending on the grade. The ripkenintheminors.com site says that a PSA 7 sold for $1600 in 2014. I don't know of any other sales. Searching for "Pepper girls charlotte" at Worthpoint doesn't show any sales records for single cards. So I could submit it to PSA. With an estimate of <$1499, grading it would be $100; and for an estimate of up to $2499, it would be $150. Plus shipping and insurance. I could submit it to Beckett, if I could figure out their process and prices. Can I submit a $1600 card for the "Standard" rate of $50? I can't find where the differences between their Standard, Express, and Premium services are described. Plus, there would be shipping and insurance (I assume) to add to the total. And for SGC, it looks like it would be (declared <$1500) $30 (grade) + $15 (S&H) = $45, or (declared >$1500) $85 + 15 = $100. So, what should I do? Am I interpreting all of the prices correctly? (and I've got to say that it was more complicated than I expected it would be to figure all of this out.) For a card of this value, is the difference between a PSA, Beckett, or SGC significant? What value should I declare? Am I shooting myself in the foot if I guess low on the value to save money on the grading fee? |
