This is my fifth 1952 Topps now.
It's condition isn't great but that's okay.
I like the man's story and now have his card.

Martin served in the Army as a combat engineer during World War 2 and was badly injured on two separate occasions. During the D-Day invasion on June 6, 1944 he was one of the first to arrive by amphibious boat and suffered shrapnel wounds to his hand, arm and neck. In a later battle he was shot in the leg and nearly lost a leg due to gangrene. A nurse had heard that he was a ball player and talked him into taking penicillin which at the time was an experimental drug. He credits the nurse with saving his leg.
During the D-Day operation, Army engineers suffered casualties of over 40 percent. Over fifty years later, Martin still could not talk about it his war experiences.

He recovered and entered the minor leagues in 1946 and ultimately the majors in 1949 where he pitched for seven different teams over his ten year career.

He passed away in 2010 at the age of 87.

There is an excellent read on Martin's life here:
https://web.archive.org/web/20100601...B?OpenDocument

Thanks for sharing. Love stories like this. Those guys who made it through the war and went on to play ball, appear in the '52 topps set, and then survive all the way into their late 80s, man what lives they lived. The epitome of a survivor.

I'll be the poor sap that follows solt0131. Amazing cards by the way. I was curious if they were recent pickups or a collection you've spent a long time putting together.

@Breakaway Dealz, it's a coincidence that I ended up landing this after your post with a 54 Topps Spahn. I was frustrated to leave the Chicago Sports Spectacular without making any purchases and ended up landing this one in on auction the following week at a fair price.

I can't believe how much this card has exploded in the last year or so.
I purchased my raw copy a couple/few ago now and I am certainly glad I did.

Congrats on your pickup.

Bought a lot on eBay with a Spahn. Already have one, but couldn't resist picking up a second. Too lazy to make a separate image, so you have to see a modern card as well.

I picked up my first 1934 Batter Up card that was manufactured by National Chicle from 1934 - 1936.
This one is missing the top background part of the card as well as part of his left arm.
Kind of cool that it was "updated" by the owner some time following the 1939 season when Bejma had played his final MLB season for the White Sox.
Bejma had a .251 batting average that year as noted on the back.
I wonder if the card's owner was a teen and was involved in serving our country in World War 2?

Bejma's MLB career was rather uneventful playing 3 seasons with the Browns (1934,35 and 36) and one with the White Sox in 1939 - all as a utility player.

When I read up on Ollie, it is mentioned in Wiki that Bejma was a childhood idol of Charles Schultz who created the cartoon PEANUTS.
Schultz was a native of Minneapolis and likely saw Bejma play in the minors for St. Paul as a kid.
This is what Wiki said about it:

Bejma was a childhood idol of cartoonist Charles Schulz, and Schulz immortalized the ballplayer in a Peanuts comic strip on February 21, 1974. Snoopy asks his bird friend Woodstock who was the starting shortstop for the pennant-winning 1938 St. Paul Saints, and Woodstock says it was Ollie Bejma.[2] This is in fact incorrect; the Saints' shortstop that year was Tony York (who later briefly played with the Cubs during World War II) while Bejma played second base. Still, the South Bend native was instrumental in leading St. Paul to the pennant, batting .326 and winning the American Association Most Valuable Player Award.

Been looking for a 61 Fleer Cousy for a while. There has been a SGC 8.5 on ebay for a while at $1,500 but no takers. I have considered it. Instead I decided to go el cheapo instead since I don't feel like putting 1500 into this card. Was looking for a decent low grade one for quite some time. Then yesterday at the Shriners/Wilmington MA show, right before leaving this one came up at a decent price and fit the bill for 10% the cost of that 8.5. Yeah this one is no world beater (has a light wrinkle), but it does have nice centering, balance, and color for this issue, which isn't that hard to find but there are a ton of off-center dogs out there. Anyways, this is a great looking sports card IMO.

Fantastic eye appeal on the Cousey!

Biggest pickup of my life, have wanted this card since I got into vintage about 5 years ago and finally made it happen. Have had it for a few days and find myself looking at this picture and even getting it out to hold it and admire

I found this miscut Pumpsie Green 1963 Topps card and thought he had one of the coolest names in baseball.
When I researched him it turns out that one of his brothers, Cornell, was an outstanding NFL player.
Cornell's card is from 1967 Philadelphia.

Pumpsie was the first black player to play for the Red Sox which was the last team to integrate in MLB.
Green was named Elijah, after his father, but his mother called him "Pumpsie" from an early age, although Green related that he did not know the origin of the name.

Cornell Green was an outstanding four year college basketball player for Utah State who never played a down of college football.
He was selected by the Chicago Zephyrs in the fifth round of the 1962 NBA draft but was talked into signing with the Cowboys to be taught to be a defensive back.

Not a recent pickup but a great memory:

I have had this program, newspaper cutout and ticket stub for 52 years now. At the end of the 1973 season, Hank Aaron was approaching Babe Ruth's all-time home run record of 714. The Atlanta Braves were in Houston to play the Astros in a weekend two game homestand and my Dad got both of us tickets for both games. We got to see him hit #712 on Saturday night and he didn't play on Sunday. I remember there being a million flashbulbs going off with every swing. We didn't bring a camera - we just watched! It's easily one of my most vivid sports memories! In the Sunday game, the Astros were destroyed 10-2 but we got to see Don Wilson pitch for the Astros. Wilson died a little over a year later along with his son.
