From press release this looks doubtful - MLB and MLBPA will have equity stake in the new company formed to solely produce trading cards. Unfortunately all about money. However, you would think MLB could get more money by having multiple partnerships but maybe don’t want to put in the effort to work out multiple deals.

How did Topps not just pony up whatever amount of money it took to keep the license?!

That might happen.

Possibly because the leagues have a financial stakes in Fanatics and it wouldnt have mattered what Topps did.

Panini will be hammered by this as well.

Considering Fanatics is worth literally 15x Topps, it's not so easy

Anyone know how the PA and League deals work here? If the PA deal is up in 2023, how can Topps produce through 2026 when the league deal is up? Unless they just re-up the players deal through 26 and then they're out for good in 26?

Does this mean 2024 and 2025 will be Topps with MLB logos but no player names?? I remember the old Griffey nintendo games had mlb license but not mlbpa and had to use made up names for the players. I hope not the case
The way I'm reading this: in 24 and 25 Fanatics can do Panini-style cards having rights to players but not teams. I would assume they'd let Topps keep player rights until 26. But yeah the disaster scenario is that we have 2 years with no one holding full rights.

It might be a power play where Fanatics tries to force Topps to sell off their rights 2 years early.

Another aside is that Panini is getting ejected from baseball too. Those cards will dive terribly.

Makes sense. I guess I’m just in a state of shock over this.

NFTs will be much worse than they are now. Fanatics will be all in on the Digital craze.

Is this why Topps won't reply to my emails?

Well let's try to put a positive spin on it - maybe this is a chance to fix the broken distributor model. Fanatics sells cards directly to shops, etc., and eliminates the distributors completely.

Does MLB not want to work with Topps anymore? Did Fanatics offer to pay a crazy high price to the get the MLB license?

Wonder if Fanatics will have redemptions or points cards?

Well, it's been fun. I guess there are a couple of years left. After that, I can't imagine I will care for whatever "innovations" Fanatics will implement.

I collect Topps because that's what I collected when I was 12. I'll potentially give whatever is new a try, but think that will very likely be the end of it for me for new cards.

It will, however, give me an unchanging focus - 2001 through 2025 or so, Topps Flagship serial numbered cards along with some other parallels but especially Topps Black and Topps Gold.
