Default Anyone Here Trying to Complete the HOF Post War Rookie PSA Registry?

I grew up collecting in the era where I couldn't afford the best rookies. I remember saving up for awhile to purchase a 1984 Topps Don Mattingly, but I bought that card because I couldn't afford the 1984 Donruss. Getting back into collecting I really wanted the cards I couldn't buy as a kid. The HOF rookies are what I started to collect when I got back into the hobby this year. I graded some cards on PSA and now I am hooked. I have 16 cards on the HOF Players - Post War Rookies Registry at PSA right now and I can't wait to get them back. In the meantime I thought this would be a cool set to put together as I acquire my rookie collection. Below is the start to my collection. I bought the Winfield, Henderson, and Puckett raw on eBay and graded them for my 15 card vouchers for the platinum membership. I got ripped off on the Winfield, but the Puckett was an amazing surprise! I thought it would be a cool thing to start a thread to see if anyone else is doing this registry and a way for people to show off their additions and upgrades! I will slowly work on this set in 2021 and hopefully get every card from the 70's to the current completed. Then I will start to work through the 60's and back. Here is my pathetic beginning!

Great collection you have shown there. Nice job on the Puckett! Other cards are sharp for the grade!

I was going to start the mentioned set, but I didn’t agree with some of the cards in it, so I just made my own showcase with those cards and much more from 75-95.

Yeah, adding players like Baines, Hoffman, Bagwell, and Piazza doesn't really excite me. The steroid era allowed some undeserving players to get in. Plus some cards I don't want to see in a PSA case. The 1992 Fleer Update Bagwell is an UGLY card!

The Winfield I payed like $90 for with grading, raw card, shipping, taxes, etc... It was one of my raw card learning lessons with pictures taken at angles. The Puckett I bought in a lot on eBay. Bought the lot for $120 earlier in the year and it also contained a perfectly centered 1985 Topps Kirby that I have at PSA right now. With all the flippers out there it is almost impossible to find any deals anymore. Anytime a decent raw card is on eBay from the 70's it either gets picked up within minutes or the seller is asking crazy prices. I think now I am going to buy graded cards for this registry unless I get lucky and stumble upon a possible raw gem!

Yes, as time goes by, you'll see it makes more sense (and saves cents heh) to go ahead and pick up the cards youd like to add, already slabbed. Saves time AND money (grading fees)

I concur - I had a Derek Jeter Basic & Collectors set and the only cards I ever graded were cards that were not available over a two year period. Patience and auctions will get you far.

I don't plan to do the whole set but rather have focused from 1954 forward to fill out. Still have some big ones to chase, here is progress

is there any reward to having a psa registry set aside from bragging rights?

I keep on adding with different slabs from CGC, SGC, PSA, and raw. Use the registry as a template, but the prices for high graded PSA slabs is insane. Graded a $1 raw 1981 Topps Harold Baines and sold it for over $100 because it got a PSA 9. People are addicted...

I'm not sure it makes sense to have any type of reward, monetary at least. Maybe something like a video or article but that takes money to do and not sure PSA would volunteer that. Heck, I believe they used to send out certificates and now just mail a pin or something. I wouldn't be surprised if they got away from that and just sent a congratulatory email and a virtual pin.

I'm going after the signed set, don't really care about upgrading to "win" over anyone else though.

1981 Topps is very difficult in PSA 10. That's why PSA 9's get the prices they do. Even if you find something centered front and back, which is a challenge itself, you'd still have to check for print defects and then you have the surface bubbles. You were fortunate.

The HOF is watered down IMO. It feels like it has turned into the Hall of Very Good versus the truly elite players like it used to be. That is reason alone for me to not try to put a set together like this.

Unfortunately, it’s not been the “truly elite” for many decades

Freddie Lindstrom, high pockets Kelly, Jesse Haines, Ross youngs, etc have been in a long time.

If you like the set, put it together but imo thats the least original thing anyone can do. I just don’t want to collect the same as everyone else

Don't know much about the players you mentioned, but also not disputing what you say. I am saying it from the standpoint of seeing players I grew up watching that were good or very good but not elite getting voted in. It used to have a sense of excitement seeing which players would get in with each class and now it's just meh at best. Regardless, people should collect what interests them even if it's what many others are doing.

I’m 34 and even I’m starting to see good but not elite players that I grew up watching getting in. Once Billy Wagner gets elected, that’s the final nail in the coffin imo

Those cards are still out there. I also graded a cheap one from COMC with CGC and it got a 9. It was nicer than the PSA 9 one and I just kept the nicer card. CGC also doesn't hand out grades for that card. It is a top pop with them and 5 9's out of 121 graded. Graded it for $8 and fine for the PC.

so it is basically just bragging rights to have the highest graded set?

Most things in this hobby are bragging rights. I think the idea of a registry is great, but competition makes things insane. Especially with PSA's grading inconsistencies.
