Default Where does the hobby stand on relic GU cards?

When it comes to game used/relic/GU/patches cards, what do you think of them? Do you collect them? Do you think they are cool? Worthless? Etc.

I love GU-Worn if the price is right.

For example, this authenticated GU/Worn Derek Jeter Pants/Jersey 1/1 that I scooped up dirt-cheap many moons ago. (Card says Player-Worn, but the uniform is actually game worn) Big fan

They are fantastic cool and collectible when game worn

They are trash (to me) when not

Might as well call it "manufactured patch or relic" like they use to. Stop pretending

Don't care for them, dont own a single "relic" card. Can't see myself ever buying one, havent bought wax in years so don't have worry about pulling one either.

Actual game-used patch cards are cool.

I like the way Donruss did it back in the 2000s. Picture of the actual item on the back.

Early 2000's Donruss and Fleer premium products were pretty cool.

Agree - having a pic on the back makes it much more interesting. Here are two commons that I'll always appreciate b/c of the pics.

Also - now I know a bat can be cut up into 700 pieces, but a pair of pants only gets you 650 relic cards.

I love game used vintage hall of famer relics, prefer a patch first then bat piece rather than jersey. I do like game used relics of modern players I admire as well. Don't really care about most modern napkin relics though.

when they first came out back in the 90s I thought they were the bees knees. but, they beat that horse into the ground. now i really dont care for them. in fact, i think the little swatches of fabric take away from the appearance of the card.

Relic cards didn't exist when I was first collecting in the early 90's. When I came back to the hobby a couple years ago and ripped my first few packs/blasters, I got a relic card in one of them and was like "What the heck is this??". Turned out it was a manufactured relic which is basically worthless. Lol

Only relic cards which I would actually want to collect (buy/trade for) now would have to be certified game-worn by the player. Some napkin patch where the player maybe wore the jersey for 1.5 seconds? No thanks.

Here's the 1 relic card in my collection I'll be keeping a while (currently enroute back to Beckett to get reslabbed because the slab they put it in was horribly scratched):

I don't like them cuz it means you have to buy/own thicker toploaders/penny sleeves to protect them

I'll pick up as many of them as I can for someone I PC. For the rest of the Yankees players, I just pick up the cheaper ones on COMC.

I will nab swatches with throwback jerseys when I feel confident that is what I am getting.

I love em. Patches are my favorite type of cards. The fact that you can spend single digit dollars and have an amazing looking patch from a jersey worn in an actual game is so cool to me. Less so with jersey napkin swatches because I don’t think they’re as aesthetically pleasing, but still just as historically cool. If it’s a HOF or older player it makes it that much better for me.

Depends on the card, but I think getting your jersey out patch cards signed is an amazing idea and I would love to do it for my collection if I had the energy.

Game used patches are awesome. Especially when they’re either hologrammed by MLB/UD for hockey and from the early 2000s classic sets. Given the info we’ve learned about the autograph market recently, I would definitely feel better having sweet patch cards than any number of dubious cut autos out there or stickers some player’s side piece signed in her spare time
