It can be but it's not automatic

There are too many nonsense degrees to validate going to college. Go to trade school instead of going for a silly liberal arts degree.

Might be the only time we've agreed on something. This is exactly correct.

Trade schools provide a high floor but low ceiling. College is the opposite. Low floor (worthless liberal arts degrees) and high ceiling (STEM degrees)

Of course I’m generalizing. There are some worthwhile liberal arts degrees and some worthless STEM degrees but in general that’s the pattern

The only correct answer is "depends"

A daughter of a friend HAD to go to Bentley, a school known for business and accounting and financial degrees. This girl went to get her teaching degree.

At the same time (2003 ish) we sent our daughter to Framingham State College (Now Framingham State University so they can charge more) 4 years we were fortunate enough to be able to pay for it as we have always lived within our means. 4 years to live there cost us $50K.

Bentley girls parents were able to kick in about the same as us over the 4 years and she still came out with $165K in loans.

$165K in loans ti start out making $35K a year MAX makes no sense.

I think that kids coming up today should strive to do something they enjoy, whatever that is. For some careers a degree is absolutely necessary. For others not so much.

Bingo!!!
Find something you are passionate about and get into that field. If it's plumbing, welding, etc go to trade school. If it's construction, medical, etc go to necessary higher education.
Too many people look at salaries as their number one indicator on what career they should go into. There is money to be made in most industries. Don't be miserable to make x amount of dollars.

To answer the poll question, it's complicated. If you need a degree for your path, 100% worth it.

This all sounds great until you learn that most people’s “passion” is worthless in the market place and you need to make money

For fields that require a knowledge base without apprenticeship, yes. However the importance of degrees has been overinflated to the point that it is seen as more than a basic understanding.

Too many companies have become lazy and disconnected from the hiring process because of a reliance on a standard degree requirement.

They have also become so ridiculously expensive that the ROI is upside down. You should not have to go in debt for 15 years for 4 years of education.

For the most part, college is a scam. A lot of jobs that “require” a college degree are jobs where a simple internship would be fine. But, we have our economy tied to expensive college at this point so nothing will change.

Did 2 years of community college, glad I stopped after that. I think you can do just fine (as I am) without a degree, but I suppose it depends what your aspirations are. Student loans are a scam though and that's one of the issues with college.

If you don't want to get your hands dirty, work in potential weather, and plan on being pain free/active into elderly age. I would say a college education is the way to go.
