Default Just received my concealed carry permit.

Now it's time to go gun shopping.

I'm an absolute beginner, only ever fired a gun in basic training, that's it. Any advice from gun experts or those that can relate? Whatever I do buy, I plan on going to the range until I can handle myself comfortably.

Excited about it, looking for a quality starter tbh.

You must protect yourself from Terries and Jerries.

Hope you selected "semi-auto" as the type of firearm you are carrying. If you checked revolver you won't be able to carry anything else except a revolver, but if you chose semi-auto you can also carry a revolver.

Besides that I would go to a shooting range and test out their firearms. You have a wide selection of handguns and we'll need more info from you, like what's your budget, new vs used, what caliber (380, 9mm, 40 sw, 45 acp), etc.

Personally I'm more of a 9mm Sig guy. My go to is a older p228, but I do like FNH FNX series and the Springfield 1911 series.

I didn't limit myself to a revolver thankfully. I definitely prefer new. My budget is probably $6-$700 range at most. I'm just learning about calibers and just from light searching online the smaller calibers seem best for beginners. Thanks for the brands & models, I'll look into those.

Depends what clothes you wear and what feels comfortable to you. I have a gun I carry most of the year and a "summer gun".

I personally refuse to pay for "training" and "licensing" for a Constitutional Right. Michigan is currently discussing Constitutional Concealed Carry in the House. In the meantime, I have open carried. Hopefully it passes since a Right that is licensed and taxed is not a Right, it's just a privilege.

Since you're looking to conceal carry I recommend something compact, not full size. Everyone will have a different opinion as to what you should get. Some will say Glock, others won't touch a Glock with their friends 10 foot pole. I personally have a Taurus PT111 G2 Millennium 9mm with 2 12 round mags. No matter what, there are going to be people who will say don't get this or that because this.

What caliber? A .380 is fine, I like 9mm personally, same caliber, different cartridge. It's in stock pretty much everywhere and is ~$10 for 50 rounds of FMJ. You can go with larger, .40 or .45 but it's unnecessary.

You'll need to find what feels good in your hands. If you're looking for small then the new Ruger LCP II might be a good option. A highly recommended compact pistol is the Smith & Wesson M&P Shield. There's tons of reviews on youtube of pretty much every firearm made. Hickok45 has excellent reviews.

The coolest gun to have would be the kind that Dr Schultz had in Django Unchained, the ones up your sleeves. Are those even really legal?

You're going to be practicing shooting a lot. Get a common caliber with cheap ammo. 9 mm is my recommendation.

Great advice. For a first gun (if money is a constraint), get a gun that has cheaper ammo (like a 9mm). A gun is only useful if the person behind the trigger has experience. Find a gun that feels good in the hand, and one that has cheap enough ammo that you can practice your aim/groupings.

It all depends on what you find you like after practicing. I can appreciate different qualities from different manufacturers, but the only handgun I own (had it for 9 years) is a Gen 3 Glock 19. Never had a problem with it, high quality, you can feed it whatever you want, and it holds 15+1, plus you can pick up Glock's for around $500.

Good luck, and stay safe

He'll yeah. Guns are cheap now that Clinton has crawled back into her cave. You should buy several handguns. I'd suggest a Glock 26. I have one and a very comfortable holster. They are a little heavy at first, but I'm at the point that it feels weird if I'm not carrying.

.380s are probably the most popular for CCW. Heard bad things about Kahr. Sigs are very popular.

I have a Taurus 38 special and a Taurus 24/7 compact 9mm for carry. Use my 38 special when I have shorts on and it's hot, looks like a cell phone in my pocket.

The 24/7 for all other times. Although I have carried my 1911 a few times just for the hell of it. Was never comfortable .

For conceal, I carry a Glock 42. It's small, light, and a Glock.

Welcome to the club!

I have a Beretta M9 and I love it. One of the smoothest pistols I've shot. I would also recommend going with a 9mm for your first gun.

Congrats, I remember how excited I was when I got mine! I don't buy into all the "get a 9mm, everyone has it in stock and it's cheap" #@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@. I carry a Glock 32 357. Sig, it's a nice size gun, not to big or heavy, double stack mags, and also very powerful, would probably go through car doors and plenty of knockdown power. That being said, I sleep next to my Glock 19 9mm. Not as much power, but will definitely get the job done, and lets face it, no matter what you get shot with, you're not having a good day! The cool thing about these two guns, i can interchange them between my holster and they both fit perfectly! Get what makes you happy!

Lots of great responses, cool to see more people with concealed permits as well. Appreciate all the advice and information. I looked up the majority of guns mentioned, i'm really liking the compact design of the Glock.

Lots of factors I didn't think about were brought up so thanks again. I'll update the thread if I remember once I finally do purchase one.

I carry a Glock 26, also have a 27 .40 that is a comfortable non-bulky fit as well.
