Default Advice on 90s basketball cards

Hi all,

Looking for advice on how to hand off my '90s basketball card collection.

1. Does it make sense to grade all the cards shown in the picture?
2. Would I be better off selling the precious metal gems "raw"?
3. Would you use anything other than PSA as a grading service?

Thank you for your help.

I'd keep the metals ungraded. They pop way more in person raw and many high-end 90s collectors will want to examine the card themselves.

I wouldn't bother grading the Apprentice, anyone can see based on centering it's at best an 8. Peel-on a nice touch. Let the collector decide whether to take it off.

I would absolutely grade the red PMG's for authenticity and fair value for interested buyers.

As for the others, only grade if you think they can potentially gem, otherwise you'll probably eat into profit with grading fees.

grade the PMG's. No to the Kobe finest because of centering. Rest are impossible to tell with the tiny pic.

You really can't tell a raw authentic PMG in hand?

Grade the PMGs. BGS or PSA are fine. Your call, I’d do BGS but only because they will grade higher. Anyone looking to buy these would probably value PSA higher but PSA grades are harsher, especially for the PMGs.

Not sure about the current value of the Chrome Kobe RC or the West auto. Those also look like grading candidates.

Let's say the high end buyer specifically requested raw. Like Spinotron said let's hang out with that DJ in Vegas and hash this out.

Could Spinotron check the corners, surface, and centering and competently assign a grade that all parties would be ok with?

I know this is one of those middie situations. Neither of these cards is important enough to attract a ping from Spinotron. So I do see the grading angle.

As other have said grade PMG's - the rest, just do the math. Lookup raw comps, PSA 9, PSA 10 comps for the cards you got. Ex I recently looked up the Garnett and from memory, it makes sense to grade that card if you're pretty sure it would be a 9 or higher. Some of the others (like Duncan Topps RC) it prob only makes sense if there's a good shot at 10. But look up sold listings on ebay.

I'm usually anti-grading. But with something as important and subject to fakes and/or backdoor copies as the PMGs are, I'd get them at least authenticated, if you're going to sell them.

The Duncan is a Chrome RC. Probably not worth grading either way.

Sorry for reiterating, but from my hands-on knowledge, 97-98 metal universe has one of the most distinctive thin foil printing technologies in existence, which they could not even replicate with the metals '11-12 and onward.

Was curious so I looked it up for OP.

Duncan raw: $20
Duncan PSA 8: $30
Duncan PSA 9: $40 - $60
Duncan PSA 10: $250+

Basically if you're sending it in a group for $20/pop, I'd do it if you're pretty sure it's a 9 or higher with chance at 10. If it looks like an 8/9, may lean no.

Too bad the PMG's are in rough shape.

Most of the wear is pretty common for these.

I will offer you the price of a strong 6.5 for the raw, if you keep the PMGs unencased. Just so I don't have to go through the process of cracking and feeling guilty about all the bubble packing microplastic transport waste.

Oh wait... I see now that there is this huge issue of Beckett-graded trimmed or retouched PMGs and that's why the PSA slab carries such a premium. Would hate to get buyer's remorse. Slab 'em up.

Wow, Geoff first arrange a trade of the 2 cards on the right for the ones on the left, plus a $500 on top. And it evolved into a bigger deal involving a 2012 Kobe silver Prizm auto /25. And now he's trying to get the Kobe auto back from that larger deal. Edge of seat popcorn.
