Default The Great Rookie Card Debate...Which is THEE Pat McAfee Rookie?

Right up there with the "Which is the REAL Jordan RC, 1984 Star or 1986 Fleer?" debate is the equally important "Which is the REAL Pat McAfee rookie?" debate. I know you all lose sleep thinking about it, so I figured I'd address it.

Lol...of course I'm kidding. I never really followed McAfee during his playing days, but my Godson got me into his show a year or so ago and now I watch it pretty frequently. Since I've been watching, I decided I wanted to pick up his rookie card. I initially purchased a 2015 Topps card which looks like this:

But then I was searching ebay a few weeks ago and was totally mind blown when I ran across this All-Pro Medallion /99 card from 2014 (a whole year earlier than the 2015 Topps) which cost me considerably more than the 2015 card. Having never seen one before, I figured I'd better strike while I had the chance:

As far as the debate goes, I know the "Beckett" definition of a "rookie" card lends itself to the 2015 Topps since it is the first base card from a standard licensed set (a la the 1986 Fleer Jordan), but as we all know, the player's first licensed card is their REAL rookie (1984 Star). End of debate.

Or this actually might have just been a REAL Pat McAfee rookie showoff thread

Insert cards are not Rookie Cards. Ever. The base card is the Rookie Card -- even if a year later.

Update: Showoff thread successful.

I would actually probably agree that the 2015 is the rookie, but I think one could also arguably agree that due to being older and rarer that the All-Pro is more desirable from a collecting standpoint.

New year, new you. Basically every card is a rookie card nowadays.

For sure. There are a number of examples where the rookie card isn't the most desirable/collectible card of a player. For example the 1992 Stadium Club Favre is a more desirable card vs 1991 Stadium Club. Or a 1952 Topps Mantle vs 1951 Bowman Mantle. Granted both of those have the rookie card earlier but the 2nd year card more wanted but it's applicable to this.

Given how cheap his 2015 rookie it's fair to say any collector of McAfee would want both and if they can find/afford the 2014 they'll definitely have the 2015 .

And yet... Only 1 card of his has the Rookie Card logo, thus making it the true right choice.

Sorry OP... now you need to go buy another other. The Mcaffee/Happy Corbin rookie card is the true rookie card!... OBVIOUSLY!

haha

I know its not the big name brands, and not pictured in Pro uniform, but he also has a Senior Bowl card... that would be his first one made

I had to check if this was the one I used to own, I was close, apparently I had #12.

2014 Topps - Commemorative 2013 Topps All-Pro Team,APT-PC,Pat McAfee,12,99,10.6800,5/9/2017 6:46:00

I think I sold it in 2017 for about half of what yours just went for. Still no complaints on $11 purchase.

I don’t believe anybody is going to complain about owning either as a rookie. Maybe 1st card vs rookie card if we want to go by the book. It’s almost better to have both as elite cards.

Serious question: Why do people like Pat McAfee? I know that he was a good NFL punter, but other than that...

Big personality, popular post-playing time show.

In a word of Skip Bayless types he’s a breath of fresh air.
