Default Michael Jordan 1983 Sports Illustrated Cover

CGC 8.0. The first of 50 times that MJ was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

Apparently Geoff from Sports Card Investor has an episode coming up that talks about the growth of graded Sports Illustrated magazines. I know he gets a lot of hate, but these things actually are super cool. This is the first one I got back from CGC, along with a Tom Brady first cover.

Sell now. If Gooff is pumping these a crash is inevitable.

Not planning on selling. The Jordan has some value so I'll be keeping it stored away, but I've been displaying my other slabs.

My favorite YouTube account has long been Baseball Card Collector Investor Dealer and watching his channel recently inspired me to start my own YouTube channel about the sports magazine hobby. It's called Sports Magazine Collector, but I won't post the link since I know that self-promotion is frowned upon on the forum.

Still very interested in sports cards and am actually in active negotiations to buy a local hobby shop that recently closed down. But I'm also hoping to find some fellow collectors who are interested in CGC graded Sports Illustrated issues.
I think I have been pretty straightforward that I love sports cards and have recently gotten very interested in the slabbed SI's. Hoping to find some other people who like to talk about them too.

Default S.I.

There has been a decent market for high graded copies of first covers for a while now.

Nice that you have a Jordan and Brady.

I collect a few older S.I.'s and have a complete collection from 1983 to the present but ungraded.

That's awesome. Is your 83-present run newsstand or subscription? The vintage ones are really cool and tough to find. Mantle and Ali first covers are currently up on Heritage and projected to go for $25k each.

I think there are other posts too, but can't be bothered to search for them. Cards are too expensive and bled dry, next up, tickets, next up, sports magazines, until most are run out by high prices.

Yep.

Also, when you get guys like GooFF the investor involved you get a run up from him and other influencers, then it'll tank a month or two later. Guy has the anti-Midas touch.

And there's nothing wrong with collecting magazines, tickets, type I photos, etc.. etc.. It's just sooo predictable that once influencer types start talking about them we'll get a few pump posts here. Intentional or not..

Son of a ****. Don't need him talking about SIs or magazines and ruining one of the last few pure parts of sports collectibles.

Exactly, the talking heads start going and they begin to throw coal into the hype train's engine, once that dies down, a bunch of collectors have been run out on prices and the guys left holding are burned out. Sometimes the racket lasts longer, as in cards, some times, not so much.

These S.O.B.s are going to try and monetize the shite out of anything they possibly can. Wondering if Becketts, TIME, GQ and other magazines with various athletes are going to go in the same direction.

Still waiting for PSA to grade Wheaties boxes...unless they do already.

I enjoy collecting Sports magazines. I haven’t gotten any graded and actually sold a lot of my newsstand issues to guys that are probably getting them graded. I have purchased issues off and on off the newsstand for years. Here are a few in my collection.

I watched Sports Card Investor for a few months last year, but stopped when he started talking about NFT's. I'm genuinely asking, because I don't know the answer...what has he ruined? I thought everyone just hated him because he's so gimmicky and doesn't actually know how to pronounce athletes' names.

I'm in a Facebook group with other SI collectors and one of the members met Geoff at a sports card show recently. He shared with the group that they recorded an episode on graded SI's that will be coming out sometime this Fall. I initially viewed that exposure as a positive thing for the hobby, but it sounds like others here definitely feel otherwise.

Consider the negative impact he has had on collecting. Collecting ==//== investing.

Exposure tends to be cancer to a hobby and for most hobbyists, exposure is only good if you're in it for monetary gain, which is what the majority of the loudest demographic is when it comes to sports cards, for instance.

If the exposure gains momentum for your SI magazine hobby, then you and most other genuine hobby enthusiasts should prepare to get priced out. Profiteers will push this thing as far as they can push it, jumble it together with collector jargon and prop up a handful of big mouth wealthy guys to make everything seem organic.

Seen it in sneakers, seen it in video games and most definitely I have seen it in sports cards and these days it can be as quick as overnight for momentum to be at full speed ahead. Geoff, or, Gooff, is nothing more than a profiteer masquerading as a hobbyist, most of these talking heads and taste makers are.

Oh, forgot a couple, tickets, game used tickets that is and Type 1 photos...

Uncle G should change his handle to O Face Investor.

Because he literally buys everything at the peak.

If the dancing monkey Geoff is talking about it...its because he and his buddies (subscribers) already own piles. They are just pumping the market and their captive audience. It's been proven over and over again on how he operates. If the influencers are giving advice, they are 3 steps ahead of you. You need to be selling when they start talking, not buying. Base cards, NFTs, Magazines, Non-Sports, VHS tapes, Tickets, etc.
