Default Question for collectors

Do any of you purposefully buy doubles of landmark cards say for example like Tony Gwynn 83 topps rookie? PSA 9 copies are readily available so buying 2 or more isn’t hard to accomplish.

I ask because I like to do that on a few cards I like a lot. But without fail, when I get them I start comparing them to each other and always find one has better color than the other when having them side by side and then I can’t unsee it.

How do you turn your ocd off?

Or is it just me?

Thanks

I do this because I like options. Keep the best one, and sell the other when the price pays for both.

I also like to own a “percentage” of the print run. Let’s say they produced 75 copies, ideally I would like to own 8 of them so I have 10% of the market.

Yep....I enjoy digging through bargain boxes. If I find a good deal on something, I snag it. I recently went through my PC and determined which copy I liked best and then moved that to the front with the duplicates behind it. It will make it easy when it's time to sell off the extras.

If I find a card at a good price I can’t pass it up. Most of the time I file the lesser quality one in a box called doubles and when the time comes that I need to sell it I know where it is.

i recently picked up a third copy of Justin Uptons 2010 Bowman Chrome Red Refractor.
Why you may ask? WHY NOT! For the price of a blaster, had to do it. Three down, two to go!

I'll absolutely upgrade cards to copies in better condition, but almost never buy doubles of a card I already own with a few exceptions. Mainly, if I find a deal that's too good to pass up or if it is a fairly rare card pr<50 that I think it'd be fun to have or if I've got someone I trade with that I know is looking for it. Otherwise, I've got too many cards on my wantlist to buy dupes. The other exception is if my aging brain (44) forgets I have a card. With all of these exceptions, the duplicate cards are intended for sale or trade. For my PC, it's one copy per card with no exceptions yet.

That is what I did in 2000 with a 6th round quarterback to the Pats. Figured I could use his cards for trade for Michigan players I needed. Sometimes buying what is perceived garbage has it’s benefits. The only issue was that many of the products in 00 were not created with the quality as it should they should have been.

I'll always consider upgrades or variations of the same card. For the latter point, specific to game used cards, if the same card has different color swatches for instance I'm all about getting each one as a unique card.

guilty as charged. I truly do not understand why I have 15 83 topps Wade Boggs or about 8 copies of the 75 Brett rookie. It doesnt make sense...

If I really like the card and it drops in price, I’ll tend to buy another copy.

I buy two, hope it goes up, and sell one. Several 'fun' cards I bought in 2015-2019 ended up getting sold off during 2021-2022. But I did hold onto my '89 UD Griffeys.
