Default New Coin Collector

Hello all,

I've just begun getting into coin collecting. It wasn't something I really planned on doing, but my mom was downsizing from her house to an apartment and she had a whole bunch of older coins that she and my step-father had collected on their travels. She also had some old Canadian silver coins, but I decided to sell most of those for their silver value (along with some of her old silver collector spoons).

So, now I have not only Canadian coins in my collection, but also various coins from Australia, Barbados, Costa Rica, Hong Kong, Hungary, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Singapore, Sweden, the UK, the USA, etc.. She also gave me several casino tokens, medals, and other Exonumia including two Chinese-Canada Friendship medals from 1984.

I really love the Australia, Barbados and Hong Kong coins! There is also a very cool 1963 Finnish 50 Pennia, which is one of my favourites. Another cool one is a 1968 Swiss 2 Francs.

I think the best coins I have in my growing collection are two UK 1 Shillings from 1950 and 1955.

Anyway, I just thought I'd share my new coin collecting joy,

Cheers!

Bel Izeard

p.s. I also got a bunch of cool postcards from the 1980s and 90s. I don't think any of them are older than the 80s.

Oh, I forgot to mention that she gave me some bills as well, but those aren't as cool, IMO.

JKK from the NGC boards. Welcome here as well.

Did she leave you any devil's face dollars? Those are fun to find. I was told they were the work of a Francophone nationalist engraver, but have never known.

Nope.

One of them was a 1954 $1 bill, but it's not a devil face bill. That bill and a $1 US bill (1974, I think) were in the back of my baby book, which she gave me as part of her downsizing.

The other bills were foreign currency.

None of the bills are in great condition, but I've still put them in acid-free plastic protectors.

Cut and pasting this from the NGC boards... just FYI for those here.

I went out to West Edmonton Mall just this past Tuesday to get more flips for my collection and decided to buy some foreign coins from a collection that was sold to the antiques store I prefer to deal with in the city. I bought a total of 12 coins for just under $12 CAN (around $8.73 US). I bought the following...
  • Bahamas - 25 cents - 1966
  • Botswana - 1 pula - 2007
  • Canary Islands - 25 pesetas - 1994
  • France - 2 francs - 1949
  • Japan - 1 yen - 1960
  • Hong Kong - 10 cents - 1960
  • Hong Kong - 5 cents - 1967
  • Hong Kong - 50 cents - 1968
  • Ottoman Empire (~1900)
  • Spain - 1 peseta - 1966
  • Switzerland - 10 rappen - 1928
  • Portugal - 10 centavos - 1968

While the store had assigned "unofficial" grades attached to all but one of the coins, I bought them more for what I wanted than worrying about a grade. All but three of these coins were prices at less than $1 CAN. The Ottoman Empire coin was the most expensive but still priced under $5 CAN.

Cheers!
