Default Junk Wax Era 2.0

Picture taken at my local BJ’s. Looks like panini printing is on overdrive now.

Big red arrow is pointing down pal.

23.99 cheaper than at Walmart or Target.

In mid 2020 I was told that we're not in a new junk wax era because cards aren't in every gas station and supermarket. I was also told that we now have serial numbered cards so the 80's and 90's junk wax era shouldn't be comparable because of that.

I'd be interested if those same guys show back up here with the same narrative or if opinions have changed..

I think we can for sure label this "era" (the last couple years at least) as the Junk Slab Era. 38,000 PSA graded Prizm Zion base RCs cards and counting..

It's only a junk wax era if you are collecting junk wax cards...

If you're buying the stuff that matters then it's a great time to be collecting.

Is that because Panini is printing so much product or because the people that entered the hobby the past 18-24 months want to slab EVERYTHING?!

Probably a combination of both.

That's because flippers are leaving it otherwise it be empty and you wouldn't even notice it.

To be fair, the difference between what they were printing in early 2020 and what they are printing right now (at least retail) is like the difference between early 2020 and like 2016.

With fanatics buying Topps, Panini will continue this and it will get much, much worse. Unless Fanatics buys Panini as well, we will see Panini products everywhere later this year.

I always thought that Chronicles could embody a strategy of placing the best insert in the most mass produced product. Absolute Kaboom! football on another level.

Flux kind of actually did that with Full Capacity. Except the entire set turned out to be a sleeper, at least in terms of design and inserts.

So how long have we been in the junk wax era? Since the last junk wax era? My local targets and WMs had displays full of 2018-19 prizm and flagship baseball retail like that 3 years ago. Everybody got used to seeing empty shelves for a couple years and now we see a display full of some garbage retail product and have to hear about how Panini is overproducing everything and killing the market There was actually a time, not that long ago, where not every product on the market was a desirable product. Seems like we're just returning to that on the low-end, but maybe I'm delusional. I just know I'm still getting $5-10 for common cards that would've ended up as filler in my packaging 5 years ago, but what do I know.

Very true.

Probably a combo of both, agreed. I think increased print runs has led to more opportunities to grade, but at the same time the push to flip has absolutely led to an increase in grading numbers. It would be hard to have one without the other IMO.

No one has any print runs on anything.
All these new sets have low print runs than 19-20 prizm....

Praise the lord.

People act like there isn't multiple options of mid to high end.

It's almost like the cheap stuff is for the kids

If you only buy the junk wax, than you're the one stuck in the time warp.

Only think that may keep it that way is the new rookie crop. They can't print Chronicles or Flux much longer.

I guess that's why hits are so rare in Flux Blasters. They self limited the high end inserts, because they thought it would be "one and done," as with Recon.

Ok, switching exclusively to draft cards of rookies. Printed around the time the player first stepped on the professional hardcourt. And maybe Flux parallels and inserts.

Are those 20 pack mega boxes for $23.99? That is a great deal if so.

A lot of this has to do with the fact that there are no reasonable grading fees for PSA or Beckett these days. It’s just a lot harder to flip raw cards, so that’s going to cut out a good portion of buyers.

The store want in just like the flippers wanted in a year ago. Only problem is that the stores are too late to the game.
