Default Do topps now cards have value

So I got lucky and I got a Mike Trout 4/5 in the 2018 all star packs. I felt like this was a good card because they were all random autos with no ability to buy a 1/1 or/5 like topps now cards normally are but I haven’t seen these cards selling for much really just wondering what people’s thoughts are on these. I also have some of the astros cards from the World Series that I will probably sell but it just doesn’t seem like there’s a great market for these cards even though they are somewhat limited. Just looking for thoughts to see how people feel about the cards as far as value and why or why not there worth collecting.

I'm sure the experts over in the Topps Now section would have a more detailed synopsis, but I find the sales of some of the Topps Now cards quite fascinating.

Take this Adam Jones Card for instance:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/ADAM-JONES-...AAAOSwF2FbxMvf

Print Run is 311, and yet hardly any listed, one sells for $43 and another in the $40's as well. There is an autographed version of this that had versions of /25, /10, /5, /1, and none of them have been listed, people are keeping them.

Take this David Ross card for instance from 2016:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/2016-TOPPS-...kAAOSwux5YVfh7

Autographed, out of 199, looks like it sold for $449.99 on a buy it now..I have a "blue" version of this /49..I know Cubs fans are fanatical but $450 for a David Ross/199 seems incredibly strong to me..

I guess my point is that Topps Now has appealed to a lot of collectors, and many of those who buy the product aren't "flipping" the cards as often, so when something that has not been out on the open market much pops up for sale, it can definitely command big bucks. It holds true for the base cards as well as the autographed versions. That can probably be generalized out to almost any card, but the "Now" collectors definitely pay for something they want, and player collectors will pay to grab something they may have missed when it was originally sold online. I'll also say that the "Now" cards that I have gotten have all come in "Gem Mint" condition for the most part. They are very glossy and have very nice card stock. They are nice cards.

I like to collect the call-up cards for the prospects. It takes the whole rookie card thing to the absolute extreme.

That Jones card has been driving me nuts. I really, really want one and it kills me that I didn't get it when it first came out. I imagine a lot of Orioles fans are in a similar position.

There are definitely sought after Topps Now/Living Set cards out there. I think what Mattsurewood posted is very true. It seems like a good amount of Topps Now collectors buy the cards to hold so there aren't as many on the market as there would be for other cards of similar serial numbering. To that point, one of those Jones cards hasn't been listed since October despite selling for a high amount and there being over 300 of them. Ugh I still can't believe I didn't buy this card when it was on the Topps Now site lol.

Well I planned on keeping most of mine but fractured my foot can’t work and need some extra funds. But I have other stuff I can sell if these aren’t worth as much.

I thought the all star game cards would be worth more since you could t buy any certain numbered card it was all luck of the draw. When I look on eBay though haven’t seen any sell for more than 200 however I haven’t seen any numbered to 5 like mine either. I also have Astro’s World Series cards and some other rookies I like them because it’s so hard to get the damn things sometimes they go up for sale and are often gone within a min.

Anyway thanks for the thoughts guys.

I collect Yankees topps now cards, but only the ones that pertain to actual games during the season/playoffs. I have zero interest in the spring training and postseason award cards for some reason. Love the auto relic cards but have picked them up for much less after the hype passes when initially offered by Topps. This way I can see the actual card and the actual auto. Burned a few times buying Trout and a couple others where the auto looked like it might just fade away in a few years. My favorite card below which was picked up for half the cost of the inititial topps offering.

A Trout #/5 from Topps Now won't sell for as much as a Trout #/5 pulled from many packed out products, but it's about as good as you could have done on those all-star sets.

I love the concept of Topps Now—capturing the specific real-life moments rather than the best photography moment. But I think my biggest drawback to Now is that there are too many cards and they look awful.

Not sure if you guys remember the Upper Deck hockey set in mid/late 90’s that had Base cards that showed moments and had a little text on the card that described the moment. The Yzerman was great:

I’d like them more if Topps worked the biggest moments into the Base product or a smaller subset, but I know they are trying to capitalize on the impulse to buy the moment WHEN it happens.

If you all would allow me to rant a bit??

Then you have so many releases on a daily basis—you can see that it’s more Topps just net fishing for sales with a fast picture on a cheap looking graphic background—trying to “flip” moments to people. “How about this one-of-a-kind shot of Jorge Soler’s side as he takes a called first strike from James Shields?!?! Anyone??? On sale today only!!! Limited time! Going once! Twice?!”

Then they slap the RC logo candy on everything—ugh...sigh. That’s not a rookie card, it’s a picture of a player that happened in a game their rookie season! Without the moment, there’s no card. If this is a rookie card, then we should be able to make our own universally agreed upon rookie cards with our phone pictures from games we go to! Back to the Soler card...”OHHH. Look who’s in the background!!! It’s Yoan Moncada—in his ROOKIE YEAR FOLKS!!! We know this is a limited edition Jorge Soler card, but we are placing a VERY LIMITED small RC logo by Yoan Moncada’s blurry head as well...making this an instant 1/1 even though there are now 700 OFFICIAL RC LOGO Yoan Moncada rookie cards in this set.”

But hey, if that’s what the people want...

I wouldn’t buy any of them unless it commemorates something a PC player did

I'd collected the 2016 set but gave up around card 120 after they moved from having 1-3 per day to 4-5. So far value is attributed mainly to the cards with the lowest print runs, usually players hardly anyone cares about. Rookies of notable players and significant events had high print runs so value is blunted (although it's pretty awesome the Color homer card is $20+). I think there will continue to be value to complete season sets, even if the number of people who would buy them is small. Over time it will be harder and harder to piece together 400+ cards, though the subsets for ASG and playoffs would probably be easier since they were often collected as sets to begin with.

They do have value... 99% of them though, do not have the value Topps sells them for direct.

They have lots of value, if you ignore the rookies. RC's are printed to a bazillion, focus on key moments and big name players and that is where you find value.

Ignore the Acuna, Torres, Judge, Soto and whatever other rookie stuff they offer, because they will make 20 rookie cards by the end of the year and the print run will be sky high.

Use watchcount.com to look up cards. You will see what I mean.

I bought a lot in 2018 but I will buy only a select few in 2019.

It is a neat program, but I don't think it will ever be more than a niche in the collecting world.
I agree with this. I spent a lot of money through 2018 and plan to cut back substantially in 2019. I'm convinced the autos will never match similar pack-pulled cards and nearly all of the base cards are worth a fraction of the issue price. There are some unique cards that look nice in a personal collection but not more than that for me.
