Default Favorite insert sets from 90-91 through 99-00

Would love to see what insert sets you guys love from the 90s and why! I’m sure everyone will have different reasons for their selections (price, design, nostalgia, photography, etc). Only qualification is that is has to be from 1990-91 through 1990-00. Also, no parallel sets! They have to be an actual insert set although parallels of and insert set are okay (for example 96-97 tops chrome refractors are no good but 1998-99 Topps Chrome seasons best refractor are)

Scans or a picture of the set in question would also be helpful for my research.

1999-00 Fleer Millennium Men are SICK SICK SICK cards. Scans however do not truly do this set justice.

Two great choices so far. Both Jambalaya and Millenium Men are near the top of my list too.

My favorites though all come from one season and are as follows -

1. 1998 Molten Metal Fusion Titanium /40
2. 1998 Playmakers Theatre /100
3. 1998 Slam Bams /100

Man oh man, are we limited here? I have way too many in mind so I'll restrict my favorite designs of inserts to a single product line, Skybox Z-Force.

1996-97 Z-Force Slam Cam

1996-97 Z-Force Zpeat Zebut (not my card, google image searched)

1997-98 Z-Force Quick Strike

1997-98 Z-Force Rave Review

1997-98 Z-Force Big Men on Court (google image search)

These are my favorite from each year. I don't have any pictures of 94-95, 95-96 or 99-00 yet but I have favorites in those years as well.

Untitled by mac_h_smith, on Flickr

1996-97 Fleer Thrill Seekers. The swirl 3-D effect of each player's team colors in the back ground makes this one the best insert set of all time in my opinion. These were very tough pulls and make them even more appealing because you don't see them a lot.

Untitled by mac_h_smith, on Flickr

1997-98 Metal Universe Titanium. The acetate with the blue foil is clean as can be. Sparkling!

Untitled by mac_h_smith, on Flickr

1998-99 E-X Century Dunk N' Go Nuts. Another acetate card. The design of these was spot on from the lettering to the action shots. Even though Fleer got sued for this by Dunkin Donuts, the idea was brilliant. I guaranteed this helped the company instead of hurting it. This was probably the best idea of an insert set ever.

That's Jam by mac_h_smith, on Flickr

I'll add 1998-99 Skybox Premium That's Jam. Acetate featuring the flavors of grape, orange and strawberry. As a kid I thought this was so cool. Who couldn't love these? Tough pulls but affordable.

I think over time with the impact of the hobby the #1 insert has become the 97-98 UD Game Jerseys. I wouldn't have put them #1 5 years ago but I think they have moved past everything else.....BUT I love all of the 90's inserts so you can't go wrong and I hope everyone has a different #1. That makes the conversation much better

My Top 5 90s Inserts:

1) 97-98 UD Game Jerseys is the greatest insert set ever imo. It is rare and super iconic 90s. Its the great granddaddy of what the contemporary hobby has evolved into. This set is super special and has really picked up steam over the past few years and rightfully so. Super iconic set and super tough to pull these

2) 97-98 EX-2001 Jambalaya is THE most iconic pure insert set of the 90s. Period.

3) 97-98 Stadium Club Triumverate Illuminator T9B (a legit front / back correctly labeled copy) - this is probably the sickest looking 90s insert in hand with 97-98 Z-Force Rave Reviews coming in a close second imo. These contain a refractor surface on acetate card design which is the sweetest combination of 90s card design imo. However Rave Reviews are nowhere near as rare as a legit lluminator. Not even close. Though these aren't serial numbered there are rumored to be less than 70 legit Illuminators of each player ever created.

4) 98-99 Molten Metal Fusion Titanium / 40 is the rarest 90s pure insert. These rarely show up for sale and have a super sweet design. The regular silver 250 / versions of these have really gained alot of steam over the past year. Given that I can only imagine what one of these would now sell for. Very low pop card. Super sick card.

5) 99-00 Game Jersey Patch is the 1st Patch Card ever created and is the perfect metamorphosis of the early Game Jersey cards to the next level. This insert has the highest known pack odds of any 90s insert at 1:112,500 of any given player. This is the daddy of what the contemporary hobby has evolved into. If you like today's contemporary hobby of sweet Patch cards and love UD Equisite these cards are where allllllll of that began. There are also the serial numbered / 25 Super Patch versions of these which are actually the rarest 90s insert if you do consider these a pure insert set. Both versions are very low pop cards.

Other Honorable Mentions: 97-98 Ultra Stars Gold, 98-99 Playmakers Theater, 98-99 Slam Bams

Starman, that’s a great list. One honorable mention that I’d like to throw out is 97-98 Hoops High Voltage- 500 Volts. If someone has a pic please add it. I think they look great as well.

I'm a sucker for a nice die cut with the 97 Jambalaya at the number 1 spot as others have said above (I haven't had the testicular fortitude to drop the $$$ on one yet though!).

Piggybacking off of Rob's post, there are so many amazing diecut inserts from the period, but my favorite is probably the 96-97 Skyboz Premium Golden Touch:

Another set that's not the rarest of the rare but deserves a mention because of how extremely unique they are, 97-98 Skybox Premium Silky Smooth:

Also, it would be a crime to not mention one of the first (if not first) truly "premium" insert set. With a slightly thicker card stock and a glittery pattern not seen again until 96-97 Showcase Row 0, the 94-95 Skybox E-Motion N-Tense was a masterpiece:

Thanks man

Its super tough to rate these cards but I think my top 5 encompass the very best 90s inserts overall in terms of aesthetics, rarity, and historical significance overall

With that being said all the cards mentioned in this thread are just unbelievable cards and your pics really show why the 90s inserts are simply the greatest basketball cards ever made up until this very day

Without question

I would really think about starting lower though, at least 1:288. The difference in rarity is negligible (especially when you start factoring in set size) and you would be missing out on some of the nicest designs ever, especially 96-97 and 97-98. The case hits of that 2 year period are basically the peak of basketball card design.

With Jordan, if he could've played into the millennium he would've been in all those 99-00 products. Raise the Roof, Game Breakers, Millennium Men, etc.
