I want to start certain players from old sets, is there a good place to see what cards are out there based on year/set? I have been using google, but some things are hard to find
For instance, for MJ, the 98 UD Encore set has about 20 cards. I see some on ebay are foils. Some look like they aren't foils, but I can't tell if its just the lighting the seller took that doesn't accentuate the foil well. Basically, I want to know if all the base cards are foils, or only some special ones are Same for others, like Area 23 etc/. Last edited by Kelvin13; 09-02-2021 at 07:58 PM. |

I don't see where it shows whether all the base cards are foils, or just some?

Use beckett.com for general checklist purposes for all years (through current), but they used to provide lots of useful information about the cards/sets themselves, pretty much up through the end of the 90s at least. It seems that as the internet was becoming mainstream and exploding, they began to struggle to continue to keep up with their background write ups for the sets. What you need to do is first search for a set or player, then after clicking on that link, you need to click on a second link under the "Item Details" section towards the bottom of the page, which should be a link with the set name you are looking into. Once you click on that link, you will probably find a good written description about the set.
For example, if you search David Robinson Metal, and then are interested in learning more about the 1995-96 Metal set (first result that pops up), click that link, then click the "1995-96 Metal" link under "Item Details" in order to see this under "Set Information": "The 1995-96 premiere issue of Metal basketball by Fleer/SkyBox consists of 220 standard-size cards issued in two separate series of 120 and 100 cards respectively. The eight-card packs carried a suggested retail price of $2.49 each. Borderless fronts feature the player in a full-color action cutout against a multicolored, hand engraved, metallic foil background. Backs picture the player in a full-color action shot with his team's logo printed at the bottom. The only subset is Nuts and Bolts (209-218). Rookie Cards of note include Michael Finley, Kevin Garnett, Antonio McDyess, Joe Smith, Jerry Stackhouse and Damon Stoudamire." |

The annual print guide is a good source of info even though I’m not a fan of how they reorganized it—used to be chronological then alphabetical within (I think) but now it’s reversed and no contents that list everything listed
