Default Patrick Ewing Signing - Question/Opinions

Biting the bullet to get my all time favorite player's signature through a "rare" private signing.

I always see tons of 86F Rookies signed so I wanted to be a little different.

This is also my first time doing a send in for a signing so I don't want to royally screw it up lol

Decided on the 93 Ultra Scoring Kings which I've learned is not easy to match with proper ink and color. So far I've been suggested to use a fine silver paint pen which seems to make sense. (I've scoured blowout and other sources for which pens to use on which cards and such but nothing mentioning this set?)

Also, I'm going back and forth on signature placement. I'm torn between the top of the card or the bottom right above the name, both spots trying to avoid the clash with the home white Knicks uni.. or maybe even on a 45 degree angle parallel to his right shooting arm.

What does everyone think regarding card choice, placement and ink?

Thanks in advance.

Card below for quick reference.

lower left to upper right slant, right across the pants/kneepads. It'll stand out in the lightning.

Seems like a bad choice to be honest

1991 Fleer. White or orange Staedtler lumocolor pen with a vertical signature in the blue box.

I’m thinking of getting the 1988 Fleer regular and all Star cards signed as well. I got the 1986 and 1987 signed at a previous signing about 10 years ago.

Yeah that one would look great for a signature.

Completely disagree, the MJ SK buyback auto looks absolutely amazing to me. Although it might actually be white as opposed to silver ink.

As for actual placement, I’d go with the bottom above the name, but not completely straight/horizontal. Go a bit diagonal.

The Scoring King is a legendary card and silver ink would look great placed slightly below his knee pads in my opinion.

Great insert.

Not a great card for autos.

Yea I get that’s what you and asu mean, I just couldn’t disagree more as long as it’s in white/silver ink.

Have you seen the Jordan? Complements the card very well.

Jordan is wearing the red jersey.
White jersey and pads on Ewing.

Certainly. Still think it would work well though.

Wish I could mock it up atm

One thing to be mindful of is that Ewing is notoriously bad to work with, even in private signings. He's not one I would choose a card that needed to be signed at a forty-five degree angle on the third Sunday in June while Mercury is in retrograde.

Try 1991-92 skybox, that was the first card that came to my mind.

One thing I’ve done when I wanted to remove confusion for signer was:

- Put a dummy card in a top loader.

- Use a box cutter to cut out exactly where on the card I wanted them to sign.

- Repeat the process on a Penny sleeve if desired.

- Load the card-to-be-signed into the sleeve and top loader and tape the top to seal the card in.

- You can stick a post-it note right under the cut-out on the top loader with a small arrow and “thank you” to make it foolproof.

I picture him almost completely ignoring one of those arrow sticky notes if it was placed for him to sign a bit diagonally and in a specific spot.

His responses to card nerdo instructions must be gold.
“Top or bottom man, pick one.”

That’s the one I had in mind when thinking about which Ewing to get signed. Looks amazing.

My second choice would be the 1993 Fleer Living Legends insert, lower right in blue sharpie or staedtler above the name although still may be a challenge due to the silvery background.

This is a common card, but would be a cool card to get signed IMO.

I retract my 1991 Fleer suggestion and second this.

His signature can be large and messy, so you don't want to risk it going over parts you don't want it to. I've only looked at Topps varieties as they often have good photography, and found these that might work when signed along the lower half, likely using some kind of paint pen to work on a glossy or chrome surface:

(Probably my top pick)

(Smooth surface, lot of room low)

(Decent area and bit of action at the top)

(Again smooth surface and area down low)

(Risk with the foil but still decent area and action pic)

(Can sign anywhere over the bottom and still have his name nicely displayed at the top - or even go the Power Boosters version for more pop)

(Another smooth surface with heaps of room between his waist and Knicks logo)

Earlier Skybox ones are likely easier to sign on, but depends on the design you like.
