Default What happens to Prizm if Topps reenters the basketball market?

With Topps going public a lot of people on here have been speculating that they are looking for growth opportunities; reentering basketball seems like a pretty obvious bet. If the league ever granted Topps a license to compete with Panini, my guess is that Topps Chrome would supplant Prizm as the premier “investment” product and Prizm would crater in value. Prizm designs are embarrassingly ugly compared to Topps Chrome IMO, and doesn’t possess the same lineage. Thoughts?

It's all opinion based and the odds of Topps getting their NBA license back is extremely low.

Doesn't that just turn into the 80's-90's again with a million cards being produced?

fingers crossed this happens. LOTS of $$$$ to be made in the NBA (and NFL for that matter) I can see topps making a push back into both markets.

Did Panini just re-up with the NBA for three years last year?

Topps won’t come back and compete, but if they did I’d expect dilution instead of competition.

If Topps came back, people would complain about their designs and make posts wishing Upper Deck got their license back.

Never going to happen.

Panini net worth is in the billions.
Topps millions.

They'll never be able to afford the license.

Not happening, but if it did, Prizm won't flinch in this market. There's room enough for both.

Chrome and prizm are both in soccer and prizm sells better.

Chrome is nothing special just like prizm is nothing special only the amount of sheep followers that try to pump it.

You think Chrome is something special go buy some hockey topps Chrome and see how popular it is.
Oh yeah no one gives a #@#@#@#@.

Because sheep there follow something else.

Topps produced mostly garbage sticker autos in basketball and nasty designs for 90% of their products.

I don't think it's a zero sum game. I think TC & Prizm can both thrive now that they are both established.

With that said I'll certainly acknowledge that Topps has a lot of brand momentum right now in contrast to, say, Upper Deck. Wouldn't shock me if basketball fans went nuts for Topps/TC if things opened up again in a way that they wouldn't for any of UD non-ultra-high end products.

Re: design. While I generally prefer TC to Prizm design-wise, I think the reality is that from a pure shiny perspective, Prizm takes things further and people seem to like it.

Haven’t you heard the news topps is going public, value over a billion. They just acquired the rights to euro 2024 over panini.

In their portfolio yesterday they want to acquire we licenses. That’s why nba has become a discussion.

It would be awesome to have competition—it means I’ll have TWO companies I can’t find at retail.
