I got this Paul Dejong card today. It’s an update “blue”/50. Other than the very faint “update series” marking under the team name I really cannot tell a difference. It’s so incredibly similar to the base card in appearance it made me think for a min so I found a Dozier blue/50 from s2 that although not spectacular to look at is much more discernible blue than what they used to print the update cards.
![]() ![]() There must be hundreds of 2017 update “blues”in common stacks.. I started looking at some other cards and noticed that the Camo pattern in 2018 s1 is much more pronounced(goofy looking computer squiggles) on this S1 Bader than the Adames(update) ![]() Just odd that they would use different printing formulas, or maybe diff printers altogether from series to series in a given year. Pretty bored today, wish they had some sort of summer camp intrasquad coverage I could watch instead of killing 20mins on the vagaries of flagship. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I hate these stilupid parralels... I found an Ohtani checklist Independence day, had no idea until a couple of days later when I really started sorting.

Yeah, any blues from s1 or s2 seem to look blue. The update ones are just a big whiff from topps. Bummer too as we have a potential HOF level star developing where the team colors woulda really......nvm

If we could just get a bordered set again one day then I'd be able to at least figure out what I like. We should go back to the color on the border with the exception of the Indy, which I think they should leave splashed all over the card.

Keen eye! Not exactly on the same topic, but I've always found it odd that Topps left a little triangle of uncolored area on vertical parallels in 2018. No point for it and kinda detracts from the rest of the card which looks so good!
![]() On certain parallels, you can also see 2 additional uncolored triangles along the sides, making 3 small uncolored sections- ![]() ![]() To top it all off, horizontal cards are another type of "variation", they don't have uncolored triangles in the middle, but some do on the corners! ![]() ![]()

Interesting - so it is mostly (only?) an issue in ‘17 update? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

the image used for the card has variable characteristics. when a parallel is created for such a 'full bleed' card, as with most recent Topps Baseball sets, the original image impacts how the final result of base image + parallel effect appears. I doubt there is any single card 'error' in production beyond leaving that little triangle of space under the 'steel girders' design to be filled by the original image + effect, rather than forcing the effect to cover the image element completely. all cards were probably handled the same in that regard.
this would also be true for the various foil parallels, such as red in 2014, green in 2013, or gold in 2012. but not true of parallels created by simply coloring the white border of a fully framed card design, where the parallel color doesn't interact with the photo image at all. |

The Ohtani I pulled is a darker card... Look how easy the Independence Day could be missed. If it wasn't Ohtani, would have been buried in a commons box for life.

This might be a dumb question but I'm genuinely curious. Is there a separate printing plate used for the parallels?
