What did you buy in FEB/MAR 2021 that you wish you hadn't?

I normally only buy PC cards (Spurs Big 3) and largely stayed away during the "big spike" of 2021....but for some reason I got sucked into the Donovan Mitchell train and started buying his Prizm/Optic graded RCs. Needless to say, we haven't seen FEB/MAR prices since and while I'm still holding in the event he goes bananas this year, it got me thinking....what did everyone else buy?

Also, I fully acknowledge someone will likely jump on and say "only suckers were buying in FEB/MAR." So I'm ready for that to pop up.

Well, did anyone else get caught up?

Should have probably kept sealed. I opened them.

I still have the bigger hits, so maybe a longer term hold will work out.

I bought nothing. Did sell two Giannis Prizm base for 2500.00 each to help pay for my kitchen remodel…and sold a Prizm 18-19 hobby box to Blowout for 5500.00.

First off- you could’ve done A LOT worse than buying Mitchell rc’s during that time. But as you know everything is basically down from that window.

I really didn’t buy too much during those couple months outside of oddball Pistons PC Cards. So nothing that was going to really carry a premium. Bought a few Mitchell’s for my PC of him as well but not any Prizm/optic/popular set type cards. Really not even sure what they’re selling for now but probably not far off of what I paid for them.

I got pretty lucky to have something else to focus on when those huge price jumps happened (also fortunate that I picked up most of my Mitchell and Carmelo PC Cards years before so that helped too).

But again I think you could’ve done a lot worse buying players that aren’t Donovan Mitchell. Without naming any names.

For me it was august 2020 where I bought a bunch of 2nd year prizm cards that are worthless now.

$49.94 for a luka #75 2019 prizm. Currently worth $5.71...
$65.65 for a luke #75 red white blue. Currently worth 19.74

I think I bought about 5 cards cards.

I only regret two because I'm down on them:

1986-87 Fleer Hakeem Olajuwon PSA 8 (paid $500, currently worth $300)
1998-99 Finest Refractor Dirk Nowitzki w/ peel (paid $700, probably worth $200-$250?)

It was such a fad. I'm not sure why I decided to hold any of them, but I actually made out pretty well.

I probably sold 30 of those luka #75 for like $40-60 each.
And the RWB had like 10 of them I sold for $75-100 each

I can certainly agree there are worse players to buy...but it does sting a little to think I paid $475 for his prizm PSA10. I don't even want to look at where they stand now. However, I'm happy to sit on them knowing he's young and has a bright future ahead of him.

I was actually curious and looked back at my emails/receipts/forum posts from that time span.

I zagged pretty hard because of how expensive things had gotten. During that specific time period, I was mainly focused on picking up as many Grogu sketches as I could.

There were a lot of quality ones available for under $100 back then, and I really wish I had picked up more at that time when I had the chance.

Kobe EX & Showcase rookies are still fantastic cards to have, be thankful you didn't get suckered in with that Kobe Topps RC steamroller
