Hey all - I've seen posts about this before but wanted to restart the conversation. I saw Collectable is a company listing expensive cards / memorabilia and allowing collectors to buy fractional shares. Is this something you as a collector would be interested in? Why or why not? What would a company like this need to offer (features, secondary market trading, proper certifications, etc.) for you to invest? [Strictly evaluating it from our perspective, not the viability of this company being successful]
Hope this sparks an interesting conversation.

Hate the idea of it. You’d have to pay me to have a fractional share of a card.

Why not take it to the next level, securitize it and sell fractions of baskets of cards to norwegian pension funds. They can't all lose money at the same time.....right?

Or better yet, create a fund pegged to the value of a basket of cards. No need to even hold the underlying asset.

You could sign up for fractional dating too and cut down on your dinner & a movie expenses that way. You might have to bid higher for Saturday nights though, sorry.

If I want to buy fractional shares, I’ll buy a mutual fund.
If I want to buy baseball cards, I’ll buy baseball cards. |

Absolutely. It makes a lot of sense for selling and buying.
If i can buy say $500 share into a mike trout bowman chrome auto that will double each year... I can see it working with smaller amounts invested in bigger cards. Better than buying a random $500 card hoping it doubles. Its more of a sure things, with certain cards like the Trout. I could see a lot of people interested in buying shares of the right card |

Very rarely do threads go exactly the way I thought & hoped they would.
This is one of the exceptions. |

Obviously this isn't new... It's been done before (or attempted)
If and/or when a legitimate option presents itself I'll absolutely be interested. Will this be the one? No idea.

If someone made the card equivalent of Mortgage Backed Securities, card prices would skyrocket and eventually collapse in spectacular fashion.

Let's say you give me $1000 to invest in an index tied to Trout prices, the value of his cards say goes up 5% so you would have 1050. In theory, I would have bought the cards, but we all know that's not how finance actually works. Instead, I invest it elsewhere and start a ponzi scheme to pay out redemptions, but you're not going to do that because you see your account going up. That's what the Wilpons thought with their Maddoff money.

Hate the idea. It’s still a collectible. It’s not a stock... to me
