Default BGS screwed me with terrible condition slab....or am I overreacting?

So if you've been following the BGS tracking thread, you know I subbed my Topps 50/50 set Ohtani relic auto #'d to /25 to BGS last month via Priority service. Reason I decided to go with BGS vs PSA was since this is a card I am not planning to sell anytime soon and primarily just wanted to get in in a slab for security, I decided to sub to Beckett as it was also nearly $1k cheaper to go with BGS. If it graded highly, that would have just been a bonus.

I got the card back, and was initially was a bit bummed about the grade (8.5/10) but as it was a thick card and thick cards always are harder to get high grades, I got over that pretty quick.

But after inspecting the slab closer, I noticed that there were all kinds of scratches on either the inside plastic of the slab or on the baggie they put the card in prior to slabbing it. I'm 99.99% sure the card itself is fine, and all the scratches are on the inside of the slab. I wiped the outside of the slab down before taking pics.

First off, can people reaffirm my thoughts that the slab being this condition is straight deplorable, and I'm not just overreacting? 2nd, what should the remedy be? I already contacted Beckett about the issue and am awaiting their response. I was thinking them 100% covering shipping (both from my house to Beckett HQ and back to my house) along with reslabbing it is the least they should do? I paid nearly $400 in insurance +another $130 grading fee just to receive the slab in this condition!

Or should I just request a full refund and sub with PSA instead (which I keep thinking I should have done to begin with despite the increased fees). Any opinions on the situation welcome!

I definitely don't think you're overreacting about the condition of the slab.

I just needed a sanity check. If this was a 10 year old slab, that's one thing, but it literally came from Beckett HQ in this condition. It's almost like whoever encased the card dragged the inside of the slab front and back pieces across some concrete before putting it together. The more I think about it, the more ticked I get!

If this was some $250 card, I would most likely just shrug it off, but this is no $250 card. Lol

Would requesting full refund even work? The condition is pretty bad but if it were me I wouldn't fo anything right now. Sending it to psa doesnt make sense since you'll be paying 1000$ plus for nothing. Neither did sending it back to them with the insurance and shipping cost. I'd just keep it as is

Yeah, it's pretty miffing, but I really would prefer not sending it back out and out of my hands again, even if they were willing to cover roundtrip shipping + insurance. I guess I'll just wait for their response for now.

Beckett really needs to work on their QA.

Hopefully they do you a solid and offer to reslab and cover the costs. Let us know how you go

Looks like the plastic sleeve, either way BGS should fix it and cover the cost. You paid for a service you didn't receive....not unreasonable to expect what you paid for imo.

They would probably suggest to ship it with your next order. Good luck.

Well, a rep from BGS responded and asked me to send close up photos, which I did. They mentioned that if warranted, they'd send a return label to send it back to them to "correct" the issue. That return label better have some beefy insurance attached to it!

The CSR did confirm with a manager that the insurance I paid previously would cover my card when I send it back to get reslabbed. With that guarantee, I will be sending out my Ohtani to get reslabbed. Hopefully the last time it's out of my hands!

edit: also gonna record myself packing it and walking it up to FedEx and handing it over to an empoloyee because I'm not taking any chances with this. Lol

I’ve had numerous BGS submissions come back with a scuffed up inner sleeve similar to the one in your pics. I’ve also had some come back with pieces of debris in the sleeve and/or slab. I really wish they’d focus on improving their quality control as their slabs are my favorite for pc items.

Dropped off the Ohtani to send back to Beckett yesterday. Also received 2 slabs from BGS as well, and the new slabs have 0 of the issues my Ohtani had.

So an update on my situation: Beckett received my card back on 7/31, and invoiced it the next day. No updates for the next 12 days, but today received a notification they had (re)verified my card and it's listed under my account as a "standard - recase".

Interesting thing is they created a new cert # for my card, so I'm wondering if they are actually re-grading my card as well? Or is creating a new cert # a standard part of their recase process?
