At first I was shocked and my first bad assumption was that "maybe he needs the money", but this is kind of an amazing story. He is selling off many of his personal memorabilia pieces and donating a major portion of the money to his charity - Camp Skyhook. I actually met Abdul Jabbar a few years ago, and frankly, it wasn't the greatest meeting for me. I totally get it though - I am a middle-aged adult male, who was able to pay to come to his event and living a decent life. An amazing thing I took away from that event was how heart-felt and compassionate he was when a young boy came up to him at the event with his mother. He stopped everything to give his attention to the boy whereas I quickly became an afterthought (as I should have been). I think it is huge for the auction's sake that he included video clips of himself talking about each of the major pieces and what they meant to him. I would love to own just one of these pieces, but obviously they may be a bit out of my reach. What item would you go after if you had the funds? Any interesting Jabbar stories? Nice share. If I had to choose one item it would have to be game worn Bucks jersey. Of course, there's no way I'd ever get it, but nice to dream.
Sounds like your experience with him is about the norm, and unfortunately why the public has never really gravitated toward him. I'm glad he's great with the youth, but I'd hope he would have softened up a bit to adults as well, since many grew up watching him play. But it's cool he is doing this and hopefully people bid on some of those bigger ticket items.

as i am one who believes action speaks far louder than words... good for him taking real action for a cause he believes in.
i met kareem at a sporting goods store in 1995 near chicago (arlington heights for locals) where i grew up. i remember pretty vividly as it was the day jerry garcia died during the dead soldier field run that year. it was early high school for me and the crossover from sports to music was just starting at this time. anyways, i waited in line maybe an hour got his book signed and then realized my mom wasn't going to pick me up for another hour. so what did i do? go to the back of the line to wait to get a card i brought to be signed! he was cool and remembered me. i think he showed a nod of respect that i waited probably an hour and 45 minutes total maybe even longer. i wore my purple lakers #32 magic jersey that day. good memories. here is a scan of the card ![]()

The gold auto on the dark area of that card looks phenomenal! I feel like I should lean towards going for a signed Game-Used Jersey, but it would be so baller and unique to have one of Kareem's Championship rings. It also takes up a lot less space.

I was all set to bid on the Lakers Warm up jacket until my son reminded me that there is NO way I can get away with wearing a XXXL size (I'm 6'1)
Great stuff there and even better cause

Great for Kareem to do this for charity and also give people who would really appreciate his memorabilia a chance of treasuring them.
The one item I would want the most from that lot would be the MVP trophy. Many players have championships, but only the very special ones have a season MVP.

Close to $3mil on everything, pretty amazing. I saw that a couple of the rings got close to 500k a piece.

Yes, he had a house in Bel Air and his jazz collection - 3000+ records - was lost, along with a bunch of memorabilia.
