Default Sell it all question

I contemplate this every couple years. What would be your preferred way to sell off a large collection of ungraded cards? Would you spend the time grading all the good ones and piece it out? Try to sell in a big lot? Sell ungraded? eBay or some other means? I’ve catalogued a good chunk of the best ones and recent comps are close to 6 figures. I’m maybe a quarter of the way through the top loaded cards, now I’m down to $5-$50 ones for the most part.

On the one hand, maximizing profit would yield greater returns. On the other hand, selling as a whole leaves meat on the bone to sway the buyer.

Thoughts?

Consign it all. Let them handle the listings, auctions, individual shipping, and dealing with non-payers.

Vintage mid/high end: send to REA

Vintage low end: not sure, maybe Greg Morris?

Modern mid/high end: send to MC Sportscards

Modern low end: send to DCSportsCards87

Sell local because it's hard to sell large amounts of cards through sights like Ebay because the shipping will cost more than the cards are worth. Only other option would be to send a few hundred at a time to COMC and sell them that way.

Consign would be the way to go.

You can also find buyers at 80% of everything, but that's going to require a list at that amount, and you probably get a better rate by consigning

Definitely consign the stuff bigger than $100.00. MC Sports Cards is my favorite place to consign with. They have some of the best percentages, especially on cards worth more than $1,000.00. For stuff in the $10-100 range I would say use DCSports87 for consignment. For stuff in the $2-10 range send them to COMC. Make sure you only send stuff to COMC in penny sleeves. They charge a top loader removal fee.

Be realistic, you're not selling anything and not going anywhere. Cards 4 life until you drop dead.

oldgoofy,

How much time are you willing to put into it?

More time (e.g., individually listing and/or grading, wait for a buyer) => more profits
Less time (e.g., sell bulk locally) => less profits

Consignment is your only option. On higher priced cards I was paying my consignor less in fees than if I were to ebay the stuff myself.

With our luck, he'd sell his cards and buy a better camera to take photos of a tree and continue to post them here.

I'm helping a friend do something similar at the moment, I've posted about the collection a while back.

It all comes down to what's more valuable to you. Time or Money

If it's time, consignment is your best path forward. If it's money, go through and determine which cards are worth grading and overall come up with a strategy to maximize profit.

I'm basically breaking down the collection into three tiers.

Cards under $500 raw will be sold as is in player lots.
Cards over $500 will be broke into player lots and sent for grading.

Player lots will be broken down further into base/relic/auto's.

All "Just a guy" cards will use the same methods.

I did this recently.

Some to REA
Some to COMC
Some to eBay
Some as private sales

Everyone is way overcomplicating this. I give you money and you give me your cards. Don’t overthink it.
