Geez that's sad - he wasn't that old. CTE-related?

Edit: 61 years old

If you look up how long hockey fighters live it's probably average or in the range.

Blows to the head, body and painkillers, steroids and HGH will age you rapidly.

You may be beloved as your teams “tough guy” but if you want to be beloved by your family long after your playing career do not be an enforcer. I love it like the next guy but fighting is still allowed in the NHL, I think they need a film like the Will Smith one for football to start seeing some changes

He was also a noted booze hound. He did some time for a DUI. Had multiple DUIs including one when he was with the Bruins. Got sent down to Maine.

Guy had his demons but he was entertaining.

Very few enforcers WANT to be just that...but their skills aren't strong enough to play in the Show. They have a choice - give up hockey professionally or become a goon/enforcer. Byers is a great example - had almost 90 points his last year as a junior, in less than 60 games. At some point he was told he wasn't good enough to be a top 9 forward and had to mold his game to stay in the Show.
