Default Looking to spice up my collecting...

I haven't been super active in the hobby this year but with football back around my interest is back. I want to change how I collect and deal in cards. I've been collecting high end HoFers, Dallas Cowboys, and Cincinnati Reds. I will still buy these, but I'm looking for something more fun to collect and look for. It's fun to collect those but it gets a little weary only looking for the highest end stuff and people lowball offering on high end stuff so I want to approach some other things in the hobby.

My ideas so far:

1. Really cool patches regardless of player or team.

2. Set Building. I've done a little of this in the past and liked it. Just never seriously pursued it.

3. College Collector. I enjoy NCAA football as much if not a tad more than NFL nowadays and the idea of picking a college or colleges I like and collecting their alumni is appealing.

What are some of the ways you guys collect? Just looking for other ideas on ways to spice things up.

Carry hot sauce in a bag with your cards - works like a charm.

I focus on a few player collections and a few sets.

I would like to add a vintage player sometime and one of the autograph sets heavy in hofers.

It's kind of hard to work on too many projects and do well in either, but at the same time if you only have one avenue of collecting then you have to overpay for items. By collecting a few there is typically a good deal out there somewhere.

Patches: Everyone loves them, but it's so dubious these days as to whether they are genuine. I'd recommend against a high end patch collection. Especially it would probably depreciate in value dramatically.

Sets: I'd recommend a nice auto set or a 90s insert set. Much easier to store and much more likely to retain value or appreciate.

College: I like this idea as a big college fan myself. Plus it severely limits the cards you might be tempted to buy and keeps things reasonable.

Find some older insert sets to build or some of the first runs from Exquisite, Ultimate, NT, Leaf Limited.

College - Go after on the card auto's first because they will retain value. The garbage signed stickered cards will decrease therefore wait on those. The oddball paralleled cards such as 1000 - 5 stripe Wild cards, Courtside Gold Silver Bronze are very nice cards to have.
Good luck !

Oh this is a series thread. I only saw the 2nd post and thought we could post anything.

In that case, get patch cards with at least 3 colors in them

Your point about too many avenues is exactly why I'm questioning things some. I don't want to over-extend what I look for or be too broad, but I don't want to be so focused I just buy something so I'm adding to the collection and don't make a good purchase.

The patches are just because they are nice to look at. I wouldn't invest much in any patch without some ink. If I go after a set it would be smaller sets with higher value like you said about the autos. The college thing would take some time to figure out how I want to go about it but it seems the easiest route to add and have a lot more to be looking for.

The higher end stuff is what I'm thinking if I'm gonna build sets. Probably won't do many full sets nowadays.

I like this idea. Going after the odd cards some people pay little attention to is a cool idea for a niche in the set building area.

If I go the patch route that's what I was thinking. 3+ colors or plates, logos, tags, etc.
