Default If you're at a card show...

If you're at a card show and going through some bargain boxes, what types of cards/players do you expect or look for?

Looking to start setting up and trying to organize my inventory. Just curious what types of players/cards are common in each types of boxes listed below. Thanks!

$.10 boxes
$.25 boxes
$.50 boxes
$1 boxes

$1 boxes: I'll expect to find common auto's and jersey cards of common to semi star players. Please don't try to get $5 for you Rhett Bomar auto's.

Unfortunately I don't have much in the way of cheaper GU and autos. Was hoping to get an idea of the RC/insert/base stuff for the cheaper boxes.

Ok, I always like to search the $.25 cent bins for base RCs of decent players from the 90's or 00's. It's hard to pass up an impulse buy of some RC I just never hit busting packs years ago or some easy to find insert.

The thing I don't like is when someone fills up anything more than the $.10 box with just pure commons out of a case they busted of 2007 Score or something.

I have my boxes broke down as quarter box, dollar box (6 for $5) $4 box (3 for $10) and $10 box (3 for $25). In my quarter box are rookies and inserts that are commons and base semi stars. Dollar box has rookies and inserts that are semi stars and star commons. My $4 box has GU, autos and super stars (Brady, Manning, Favre), my $10 box has $10 to $20 cards in it. I do really really well with this set up. Have many return customers, there's always someone going thru them and often times 4 or 5 people going thru them and make anywhere from $100- $300 a show out of them. The trick is make them good values where people are willing to take the good with the bad. Someone will take that Rhett Bomar auto to get the 2 Bradys cheaper lol

Appreciate the replies! I guess I have trouble when people say commons or semi stars etc.

Example, a bunch of 90s and 2000s base cards of Terrell Davis, Aikman, Bettis, etc. Where do those go?

Aikman in the dollar box (as I'm in Texas lol) the rest would go in my quarter box. The main question you need to ask yourself is do you want to make more money slowly or move inventory and make less money faster. I want to make less money faster and move my "junk" that I cant move anywhere else. Use that money to buy deals that I can make more money on.

Best piece of advise I got when I started was don't use the show to make money, that's what ebay is for (Its cheaper in the long run), use shows for buying deals and making connections.

Cost of the show is ~$50 for 1 table, 2 for $90, plus your gas and your time. So at $90 just for 2 tables you need to make $900 to make your fees 10% of your sales (Ebay fees). If you pay $90 and only made $200 then you paid 50% in fees. So move your junk mostly so you don't lose too much highend (unless of course you can make $900 or more) and use your time there to make connections and move low end stuff that's hard to sell elsewhere.

I have a collector that buys all my Emmitts. I charge him $10 to buy and sell him an Emmitt. So I do nothing but cover cost for a week and he picks it up and I get $10. Also have a Biggio collector and a Boba Fett collector. I also have people bringing me stuff in that I can flip on ebay for a profit.

Oh and if you think you're going to do this then get Beckett price guide. I use the online guide. Not necessarily for the shows (But a LOT of people still go off Beckett) but to help you sort your stuff. It really helps get a general value for low end stuff and helps knowing which box to put it in. If it books for $1 you know to put it in your quarter box. If it books for $10 you know your $4 box. It helps so you're not putting a $1 card in your $4 box lol

If you're looking to move stars of 90s junk era wax then don't just have them in the 0.25 bin have them at 0.25 each or 6 for $1.00 that way you can get rid of it in bigger quantities.

Grab bags work well too that way you can get rid of even no name base.

Well Id be doing it to move out a lot of inventory just sitting around but at the same time, I dont really wanna just give the stuff away.

I have a huge variety of just simple base of HOFers/Legends/Stars (eli, Big ben, Ryan, Calvin Johnson, etc, just not sure how to price those guys being its just simple base)

Then I have some cheaper inserts the same guys and guys like Emmitt, Aikman, Moss, Rice, Sanders, Marino.

I would say get Beckett then. Easy to look up prices and give a general idea where to put them. $2 and under, quarter box. 5 and under $1 box etc etc. Or however you want to split it. Put the hot players in a higher box to compensate beckett being slow and you should do fine. Being a new dealer you'll get quite a bit of customers looking for new stuff. If you sell a lot then you know you have good value, if you sell a little then you know you're over priced and then you can judge by that. Local teams sell better so can be priced higher, stars that aren't really collected (Let's say people like Andy Dalton and Jamaal Charles) need to be priced lower if you want to move them. If you up sell you'll also get more sales. Just remember it's easy to replace. Most rookies, stars, semi stars and commons can be had for $25- $30 for a 5000 count box pretty easily.

I appreciate the input and your advice. The stuff I have the gentleman whom I bought it all from had it all put in beckett and has BV stickers on each card..even the base so that works already done for me.

Lowest box I have is $1...10 for $5...
Usually really popular.

But half the time I could put a $50 card in a $10 box and no one would notice/buy it anyway lol

I don't topload the quarter box jut penny sleeves. I price and topload all the others. Pricing is important to me incase the contents of the boxes get messed up, and they do.

I have setup a few times lately relatively unsuccessfully. Pretty much everything I would setup with is $5 and up. Everything under $75 or so in a box on the table and mixed across loosely. Two displays full of $75 and up. I never get interest in the stuff in the cases. Just not the high end buyers around me and at this time I dont have the time or patience to get into the super cheap stuff.

It seems that most dealers, not all, have a lot of success with the $1 and below boxes. I have tons of it already and it's just sitting here so figured I'd go through it all and see what I can do with it.

I have a lot of mid-highend but like you said, it seems like a tough task.

That's what I was thinking. Penny sleeves for quarter cards and top loaders for $.50- $1 cards. I'm thinking maybe using colored stickers to differentiate the prices.

Nepatsfan12dt, if you are looking for roughly a hundred base cards of each player -Davis, Aikman, Bettis ? Let me know.

I have probably 15-20k cards to go through so I don't need any for inventory, just curious if that kind of stuff moves.

That depends on you. If you want a dollar each for your Davis base because they're worth 3 (just an example) there's no one who will pay that. But if you price them at a quarter people think they're getting a $3 card for 25 cents and they will slowly dissipate.

As someone who tries to complete some parallel and insert sets,
I prefer to see inventory organized by year/company ...
but I do realize that that is unrealistic nowadays, especially for a card show.
