Default What does the word "High End" mean to you?

I have been looking through some post and I've noticed collectors using the word "high-end" on some cards that I would consider mid-end cards. On the flip side, I may have used the word "high-end" on cards that a few collectors probably thought were mediocre.

I find as time goes by and my collection grows, the word "high-end" has a different/upgraded meaning. In my opinion, the definition of "high-end" varies from collector to collector based on the value of their collection. For example, if my most valuable card is worth $250, anything worth more than that would be considered "high-end" in my eyes. However, a collector who has multiple cards worth $500, would look at the card worth $250 and think nothing of it. This same concept applies to collectors with cards worth $5k, they could look at a card worth $1k and think nothing of it.

"The guy with the Honda is impressed by a BMW, the guy with the Lambo couldn't care less about the BMW" kind of theory. Any thoughts?

Best wishes,
Greg

High end, imo, should be seen differently based on the player.

Honus Wagner high end = $2,800,000.00

Honus Wangner low end = What? $5?

So if bundle all cards into just three categories, low, mid, and high, then there are no high end basides Honus Wagner

It should be done by the player...... only way it'll work.

You can have a player that has a low end of $1-5, mid $40-50 and high at $200 or so.

Yeah, it's by the player.

^^^^ This too!

But if we're talking only based on price, it's gotta be by the player, or it just won't work.

EDIT: lol.... it was "^^^^ this too!" before the edit....

I definite it by product. So to me, all the $400+ single pack products are high-end, products with a $20-$200 per pack price is mid end, and everything under that is low-end.

I never considered player before. What would my season update auto of Kevin Durant be considered? (I always thought low end)

But what happens when you pull a $2,000.00 card out of a "low end" product? Is the card still low end? lol

I think it should be done by the player........ and by the individual card.

To me, it's anything $100 or up for any given single card (not combination of multiple cards), as I collect cards based on my "allowable"/"self-assigned" budget.

Great answer and super valid point! I didn't think about that but it makes perfect sense!
A Lebron auto that is worth $150 is "low end" in the category of "LeBron autos" but super high end for........ I don't know, a Ruben Patterson auto hahaha. Great point!

This is kind of what I was thinking as well, the definition of "high-end" is based on what is within your means

Flat price. 100$+. Who cares the player product or numbering. That seems to be the threshold for big spenders. A lot of people can spend 50 bucks but I find it harder to move anythng over 100 unless its on fire.

i agree with this...........

for the longest time, high end vs low end has been defined by the cost of the product... recently, it seems that it is taking on new meaning.

you can pull a high dollar card out of a low end product, and a low dollar card out of a high end product.

Topps even used to market their products as:

low end (e.g. Topps S1, S2)
premium (e.g. Chrome)
high end (e.g. TTT, Topps Sterling... of course prices have gone up for newer high end)

and it had nothing to do with how much or how little the cards would sell for.

I think that there are two definitions of "high-end"......... personal and actual

High-end (Personal definition) - Based on what you can "afford" to buy. For example, you chose the value of $100+ for a reason. There are guys who would say $50+ and guys who would say $500+, sh*t, there are guys who would even say over $5k+ (99.9% of guys who used the word "high-end" base it on this definition)

High-end (Actual) - Based on every card in the market. For example, a Lebron SPx rookie, SP Authentic rookie and Ultimate rookie would be considered "mid-end" compared to the Exquisite rookie, but then again, the Exquisite rookie would be considered mid-end next to the Ultimate Logoman rookie 1/1. Obviously no one would say that the Lebron exquisite rookie is a "mid-end" card, but if you think about it...... you know what I mean? LOL. This is the actual definition of high end, which is based on every single card in the hobby, not just the cards that are "realistic" in the budget

The point of the story is, when collector decides what's considered "high-end," they base it on what they can afford.

I'll have to disagree with this, I'd rather pull an MJ auto out of 04-05 Hardcourt than to pull a Luke Jackson Exquisite rookie auto patch from 04-05 Exquisite..... product has nothing to do with determining "high-end" unless we are comparing "MJ autos with MJ autos" or "Lebron autos with Lebron autos" Which still doesn't make that much of a difference unless it's Exquisite

Similarly, if you pull a common GU out of a box of NT, is it low-end? Even though it came from a high-end product? Or if you have a 1/1 logoman auto of a scrub player that doesn't sell for very much, does that make it a low-end card?

Or the example I posted after my first post, what about a Kevin Durant on-card auto from Panini Season Update? Or even a Bill Russell auto from Bowman 48? I never thought of those as "high-end" before.

The definition "out there" is $100up. For me personally, I would like it to be $500up for "high-end" and $1000up for "super high-end" and $5000up for "mega high-end".

Very subjective question. I consider anything above $250 high end. Everyone has a different definition and no one is wrong with whatever they consider "High End"
