Default Evan Carter - future superstar or overhyped? thread

I figured he was worthy of a thread since his card prices have skyrocketed lately. Promoted from AA with only an 8-game pit stop at AAA, then crushed the majors in September for a 182 OPS+ and 1.6 WAR in 23 games. In 15 postseason games so far, his OPS is over 1000. If the Rangers win the series, he's got a good chance to be World Series MVP and then still be RoY-eligible next season. Is he overhyped and will come back to Earth next year? Or is he a future hall of famer?

Also am I reading this slab wrong or did someone just pay $1400 for a card where only the auto is graded a 10 and the card itself is graded authentic? (meaning it's obviously damaged or they would've had the card graded too)

(no matter what I do I can't get this link to work when you click it, but it works if you right-click it and "Go to http...." in Chrome. /shrug)

Adolis Garcia is the MVP as of now, I don’t know if there’s a close second. We’ll need to wait and get more info on his injury though.

I don't think he is an elite player, but he is really good. His card prices have nowhere to go but down, but I think he will be a fan favorite in Texas for a long time as long as he stays even close to what he is now. As always, anyone buying during the crazy hype period will be overspending.

Why would you think that? That term is utilized for players that have statistically already achieved greatness. For example, Mike Trout, Miguel Cabrera and Clayton Kershaw are future hall of famers. Maybe you should adjust your description of him to something like, HOF caliber player, even then, that's weird.

Seager is probably 2nd in line.

I don't think that. It's just a hype thread to get people talking, speculating, etc. For fun.

He’s only 21 years / 2 months old —- so, the age piece is really good

Going 0-6 the last two games isn't really helping Garcia's case for World Series MVP. A walk off homer will only help your case so much.

True, but I don’t know how closely the voters are looking into stats. We’ll see. If the vote was today I guess I wouldn’t be shocked if Seager won. Thankfully we have lots more baseball to play!

Eeehhh, I would say Corey Seager is strongly in the running. Sure, he only has two hits. But one was a homer that saved Game 1, and the other was a homer that was the difference in Game 3.

I know it was only the bottom of the 2nd, but his outfield assist last night felt like a game changer.

Sure, Walker should have held up to preserve 1st and 3rd with no outs ... but the throw. Whew.

I think it's pretty wide open. Heck, if the vote was today, I could see Pham winning it even though he's on the losing side.

But I'd give Seager's 2 hr, 4 RBI, 4 runs line the edge over Garcia.

What would be a good comp? Maybe Kyle Tucker light? As good as Tucker is do even his cards sell well?

I think there is a non-zero chance he could be a superstar meaning his cards still go up. Not likely though.

Prior to this season he was considered to be a good prospect (ranked anywhere from 22nd to 41st), but not top-tier.

He's had a great OBP at all levels (.388 being his lowest), but his power appears to be fairly average (.476 and .451 SLG at A+ and AA), although he does have good speed.

So for me, his comp is someone like Joey Votto, which isn't bad at all.

I don't know how his bat-to-ball skills are going to ultimately develop, since his strikeout rates aren't fantastically encouraging, but this guy has the best approach at the plate I've seen from a hitter his age since Juan Soto. I had never heard of the guy before the playoffs, but as an Oriole fan I left that series finding his at-bats probably more profoundly irritating to watch than any single thing I saw out of the Rangers in the series. Not that the Orioles have this legendary pitching staff or anything, but it felt like he was fooled precisely zero times at that plate that whole series, even against the couple quite good pitchers the Orioles have that did pitch well that series. I don't think it's wrong to overstate how deeply impressive that is considering the guy just turned 21 in August.

Hard to know how this guy is going to shake out, since I don't think there are really great comps for guys like this. He reminds me of players like Soto and Votto with that remarkable plate discipline, but I don't see him really being as fantastic a pure hitter as them, and he has a little bit of an advantage in other areas for being pretty athletic with a strong feel for fielding. So I'm taking the over on Carter. I kinda see him as being one of those guys that doesn't always have superstar-level counting stats but ends up at the top of the league in wins above replacement every year for how well he contributes to the game in a bunch of different categories. I don't think anybody buying his cards at the slightly bloated prices are going to be all that upset with their investment, even if I don't really see him getting to Soto status in the hobby. If he never regresses from that approach he has right now, this guy is going to irritate a lot of fanbases around the league for a lot of years.

The first name that came to my mind too. Doesn’t have that power yet, but it may develop. I like his game at this point

He will be baseball good but hobby irrelevant like 99% of players in the game. He will likely be trade bait in a year or two if he continues to be productive.

I know pitchers don’t like in it most of the time, but Jon Gray has been key for them this series.

Not sure what series some of you guys are watching, but Seager is the WS MVP as of today. Two walks, three runs and the game-tying HR in game 1... game-winning (basically) HR in Game 3 plus the double play he started in the 8th inning... sorry, I know this isn't what this thread is about... I'll head back to the football boards.

Go ahead and move him solidly into 1st. Garcia is out the rest of the series.

Between Seager and Carter for the Rangers now

Another Seager HR probably moves him into the obvious pick thus far.

Safe to say Seager is the MVP as of now.
